This paper investigates the performance of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems in the presence of automatic repeat request (ARQ) feedback. We show that, for a large range of performance metrics, the data transmission efficiency of the ARQ schemes is determined by a set of parameters which are scheme-dependent and not metric-dependent. Then, the results are used to study different aspects of MIMO-ARQ such as the effect of nonlinear power amplifiers, large-scale MIMO-ARQ, adaptive power allocation and different data communication models. The results, which are valid for various forward and feedback channel models, show the efficiency of the MIMO-ARQ techniques in different conditions.

A method transmits a block of symbols in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network including a transmitter having a set of transmit antennas and a receiver having a set of receive antennas. A block of symbols is coded with a first code to generate a first block, which is transmitted and received. If a decoding of the first block is incorrect, then block of symbols is coded with the first code and then a second code different than the first code to generate a second block. The second block is transmitted, received and combined with the first block to recover the block of symbols.

Double space time transmit diversity (D-STTD) is a promising open loop MIMO scheme for spatial rate 2 in the system with four transmit antennas, which has been adopted in LTE and 802.16e. In this paper, we propose an adaptive HARQ scheme based on quasi-orthogonal space-time block coding (QOSTBC) for D-STTD system under quasi-static channel environment. "Adaptive" means that there are two possible coding forms of QOSTBC and one of them will be chosen according to the lower inter-antenna interference in the equivalent channel matrix. At the same time, the adaptation leads to the employment of a low-complexity linear detection at the receiver. With one-bit feedback, this adaptive HARQ scheme is demonstrated to exploit more gain than the traditional Chase- Combing or Increment Redundancy scheme.

An Adaptive HARQ Scheme Based on Quasi-Othogonal Space-Time Coding for D-STTD System

Single carrier (SC) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with frequency domain equalization (FDE) is regarded as one of the best candidates for uplink broadband wireless communication systems. This paper proposes a FDE with ordered parallel interference cancellation (FDE-OPIC) for uplink SOMIMO system. Due to the gain brought by the ordering and Gauss-Seidel iteration, the proposed FDE-OPIC outperforms FDE with parallel interference cancellation (FDE-PIC) by about 1~2 dB when target BER equals 10E-3. Besides, FDE-OPIC with 2 iterations can even achieve the same performance as FDE with ordered successive interference cancellation (FDE-OSIC) while still holding low complexity in severe frequency selective channel.
