Most fi eld erosion studies in agricultural areas provide little information on the probable errors involved. Here, for the fi rst time, we compare the accuracy, time and cost of conventional and new methodologies for gully surveying, and provide a model to estimate the effort required to achieve a specifi ed accuracy. Using a terrestrial LiDAR survey of a 7.1-m-long gully reach as a benchmark data set, the accuracies of different measurement methods (a new 3D photo-reconstruction technique, total station, laser profi lemeter, and pole) are assessed for estimating gully erosion at a reach scale. Based on further fi eld measurements performed over nine gullies (>100 m long), a simulation approach is derived to model the expected volume errors when 2D methods are used at the gully scale. All gullies considered were located near Cordoba, Spain. At the reach scale, the fi eld measurements using 3D photo-reconstruction and total station techniques produced cross-sectional area error values smaller than 4%, with other 2D methods exceeding 10%. For volume estimation, photo-reconstruction proved similar to LiDAR data, but 2D methods generated large negative volume error (EV) values (<–13% for laser profi lemeter and pole). We show that the proposed error expressions derived from the model are in line with the reach-scale fi eld results. A measurement distance factor (MDF) is defi ned that represents the ratio between cross-section distance and the gully length, and thus refl ects relative survey effort. We calculate the required MDF for specifi ed values of EV, illustrating how MDF decreases with increasing gully length and sinuosity.

Gully erosion is considered to be one of the main causes of land degradation in arid and semi-arid territories around the world. In this research, gully erosion susceptibility mapping was carried out in Semnan province (Iran) as a case study in which we tested the efficiency of the index of entropy (IoE), the Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method, and their combination. Remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) were used to reduce the time and costs needed for rapid assessment of gully erosion. Firstly, a gully erosion inventory map (GEIM) with 206 gully locations was obtained from various sources and randomly divided into two groups: A training dataset (70% of the data) and a validation dataset (30% of the data). Fifteen gully-related conditioning factors (GRCFs) including elevation, slope, aspect, plan curvature, stream power index, topographical wetness index, rainfall, soil type, drainage density, distance to river, distance to road, distance to fault, lithology, land use/land cover, and soil type, were used for modeling. The advanced land observing satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model with a spatial resolution of 30 m was used for the extraction of the above-mentioned topographic factors. The tolerance (TOL) and variance inflation factor (VIF) were also included for checking the multicollinearity among the GRCFs. Based on IoE, we concluded that soil type, lithology, and elevation were the most significant in terms of gully formation. Validation results using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) showed that IoE (0.941) reached a higher prediction accuracy than VIKOR (0.857) and VIKOR-IoE (0.868). Based on our results, the combination of statistical (IoE) models along with remote sensing and GIS can convert the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) models into efficient and powerful tools for gully erosion prediction. We strongly suggest that decision-makers and managers should use these kinds of results to develop more consistent solutions to achieve sustainable development on degraded lands such as in the Semnan province.

Proposing a novel predictive technique for gully erosion susceptibility mapping in arid and semi-arid regions (Iran)

Gully erosion is a major environmental problem, posing significant threats to sustainable development. However, insights on techniques to prevent and control gullying are scattered and incomplete, especially regarding failure rates and effectiveness. This review aims to address these issues and contribute to more successful gully prevention and control strategies by synthesizing the data from earlier studies. Preventing gully formation can be done through land use change, applying soil and water conservation techniques or by targeted measures in concentrated flow zones. The latter include measures that increase topsoil resistance and vegetation barriers. Vegetation barriers made of plant residues have the advantage of being immediately effective in protecting against erosion, but have a short life expectancy as compared to barriers made of living vegetation. Once deeply incised, the development of gullies may be controlled by diverting runoff away from the channel, but this comes at the risk of relocating the problem. Additional measures such as headcut filling, channel reshaping and headcut armouring can also be applied. To control gully channels, multiple studies report on the use of check dams and/or vegetation. Reasons for failures of these techniques depend on runoff and sediment characteristics and cross-sectional stability and micro-environment of the gully. In turn, these are controlled by external forcing factors that can be grouped into (i) geomorphology and topography, (ii) climate and (iii) the bio-physical environment. The impact of gully prevention and control techniques is addressed, especially regarding their effect on headcut retreat and network development, the trapping of sediment by check dams and reduction of catchment sediment yield. Overall, vegetation establishment in gully channels and catchments plays a key role in gully prevention and control. Once stabilized, gullies may turn into rehabilitated sites of lush vegetation or cropland, making the return on investment to prevent and control gullies high. (c) 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Gully prevention and control: Techniques, failures and effectiveness

Soil erosion changes during the last 30 years and contributions of gully erosion to sediment yield in a small catchment, southern China

The objective of this study was to address the role of gully erosion on sediment delivery at the catchment scale by assessing the contribution of gullies to the total sediment yield at the outlet of the Kamech (Cape Bon, Tunisia), which is a small cultivated catchment in the Mediterranean environment. The methodology was based on the long-term analysis of the evolution of gully volume, and the total volume of sediment that reached the catchment outlet. The evolution of gully volume was assessed by field surveys and image analysis. The total volume of sediment was calculated using intensive field monitoring of the runoff and erosion in the reservoir at the catchment outlet. The contribution of gullies to the total flux of sediment that reached the catchment outlet was estimated to be less than 30%. This means that siltation of the reservoir was mainly due to erosion processes other than gully erosion, i.e., topsoil erosion processes such as rill and interrill erosion in cropland areas. This result was consistent with a previous independent estimation of the apportionment of gully and topsoil erosion sources conducted at the same site using the fingerprinting approach. Therefore, the study confirms that, even in a heavily eroded agricultural catchment area with a dense network of gullies, gully erosion nevertheless accounted for less than 30% of the total erosion balance. The results also showed that the cumulated gully length has decreased in the last fifty years, thus revealing the declining role of gullies. However, the decrease in gully activity could not be linked to an isolated factor. Complementary observations, such as the appearance of vegetation in the permanent gullies and the decrease in the percentage of active gullies, showed that the degree of hydro-sedimentary connectivity in the Kamech catchment has probably entered a decreasing phase. We also analysed the potential use of historical aerial images for studying gully erosion. We found that these images were useful for calculating accurate ortho-photography but failed to provide a DEM with the precision required to measure the historical volume of gullies.
