The area of artificial muscle is a highly interdisciplinary field of research that has evolved rapidly in the last 30 years. Recent advances in nanomaterial fabrication and characterization, specifically carbon nanotubes and nanowires, have had major contributions in the development of artificial muscles. However, what can artificial muscles really do for humans? This question is considered here by first examining nature's solutions to this design problem and then discussing the structure, actuation mechanism, applications, and limitations of recently developed artificial muscles, including highly oriented semicrystalline polymer fibers; nanocomposite actuators; twisted nanofiber yarns; thermally activated shape-memory alloys; ionic-polymer/metal composites; dielectric-elastomer actuators; conducting polymers; stimuli-responsive gels; piezoelectric, electrostrictive, magnetostrictive, and photostrictive actuators; photoexcited actuators; electrostatic actuators; and pneumatic actuators.

Artificial Muscles: Mechanisms, Applications, and Challenges.

Micro and nanoelectromechanical systems M/NEMS have been extensively investigated and exploited in the past few decades for various applications and for probing fundamental physical phenomena. Understanding the linear and nonlinear dynamical behaviors of the movable structures in these systems is crucial for their successful implementation in various novel technologies and to meet the long list of new sophisticated requirements. This paper presents a review for some of the recent topics pertaining to the dynamical behaviors, linear and nonlinear, of M/NEMS resonating structures. First, an overview is presented of the various used dynamical approaches to enhance the sensitivity of resonators for sensing applications. Then a summary is presented of the recent works on the linear and nonlinear mode coupling in M/NEMS resonator. Next, recent research is reviewed on coupled M/NEMS resonators, mechanically and electrically, leading to collective behaviors like mode localization. The final part of the paper discusses analytical approaches that have been developed to better understand and investigate the dynamical behavior of M/NEMS resonators focusing on the perturbation method the multiple time scales.

Linear and nonlinear dynamics of micro and nano-resonators: Review of recent advances

Current solutions developed for the purpose of in and on body (IOB) electrical stimulation (ES) lack autonomous qualities necessary for comfortable, practical, and self-dependent use. Consequently, recent focus has been placed on developing self-powered IOB therapeutic devices capable of generating therapeutic ES for human use. With the recent invention of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), harnessing passive human biomechanical energy to develop self-powered systems has allowed for the introduction of novel therapeutic ES solutions. TENGs are especially effective at providing ES for IOB therapeutic systems given their bioconformability, low cost, simple manufacturability, and self-powering capabilities. Due to the key role of naturally induced electrical signals in many physiological functions, TENG-induced ES holds promise to provide a novel paradigm in therapeutic interventions. The aim here is to detail research on IOB TENG devices applied for ES-based therapy in the fields of regenerative medicine, neurology, rehabilitation, and pharmaceutical engineering. Furthermore, considering TENG-produced ES can be measured for sensing applications, this technology is paving the way to provide a fully autonomous personalized healthcare system, capable of IOB energy generation, sensing, and therapeutic intervention. Considering these grounds, it seems highly relevant to review TENG-ES research and applications, as they could constitute the foundation and future of personalized healthcare.

Electrostatic-driven microelectromechanical systems devices, in most cases, consist of couplings of such energy domains as electromechanics, optical electricity, thermoelectricity, and electromagnetism. Their nonlinear working state makes their analysis complex and complicated. This article introduces the physical model of pull-in voltage, dynamic characteristic analysis, air damping effect, reliability, numerical modeling method, and application of electrostatic-driven MEMS devices.
