What will 5G be? What it will not be is an incremental advance on 4G. The previous four generations of cellular technology have each been a major paradigm shift that has broken backward compatibility. Indeed, 5G will need to be a paradigm shift that includes very high carrier frequencies with massive bandwidths, extreme base station and device densities, and unprecedented numbers of antennas. However, unlike the previous four generations, it will also be highly integrative: tying any new 5G air interface and spectrum together with LTE and WiFi to provide universal high-rate coverage and a seamless user experience. To support this, the core network will also have to reach unprecedented levels of flexibility and intelligence, spectrum regulation will need to be rethought and improved, and energy and cost efficiencies will become even more critical considerations. This paper discusses all of these topics, identifying key challenges for future research and preliminary 5G standardization activities, while providing a comprehensive overview of the current literature, and in particular of the papers appearing in this special issue.

What Will 5G Be

Millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz are a new frontier for cellular communication that offers the promise of orders of magnitude greater bandwidths combined with further gains via beamforming and spatial multiplexing from multielement antenna arrays. This paper surveys measurements and capacity studies to assess this technology with a focus on small cell deployments in urban environments. The conclusions are extremely encouraging; measurements in New York City at 28 and 73 GHz demonstrate that, even in an urban canyon environment, significant non-line-of-sight (NLOS) outdoor, street-level coverage is possible up to approximately 200 m from a potential low-power microcell or picocell base station. In addition, based on statistical channel models from these measurements, it is shown that mmW systems can offer more than an order of magnitude increase in capacity over current state-of-the-art 4G cellular networks at current cell densities. Cellular systems, however, will need to be significantly redesigned to fully achieve these gains. Specifically, the requirement of highly directional and adaptive transmissions, directional isolation between links, and significant possibilities of outage have strong implications on multiple access, channel structure, synchronization, and receiver design. To address these challenges, the paper discusses how various technologies including adaptive beamforming, multihop relaying, heterogeneous network architectures, and carrier aggregation can be leveraged in the mmW context.

Millimeter-Wave Cellular Wireless Networks: Potentials and Challenges

In this letter, the performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is investigated in a cellular downlink scenario with randomly deployed users. The developed analytical results show that NOMA can achieve superior performance in terms of ergodic sum rates; however, the outage performance of NOMA depends critically on the choices of the users' targeted data rates and allocated power. In particular, a wrong choice of the targeted data rates and allocated power can lead to a situation in which the user's outage probability is always one, i.e. the user's targeted quality of service will never be met.

On the Performance of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Systems with Randomly Deployed Users

Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a paradigm shift from conventional orthogonal multiple-access (MA) concepts and has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for fifth-generation mobile networks. In this paper, the impact of user pairing on the performance of two NOMA systems, i.e., NOMA with fixed power allocation (F-NOMA) and cognitive-radio-inspired NOMA (CR-NOMA), is characterized. For F-NOMA, both analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate that F-NOMA can offer a larger sum rate than orthogonal MA, and the performance gain of F-NOMA over conventional MA can be further enlarged by selecting users whose channel conditions are more distinctive. For CR-NOMA, the quality of service (QoS) for users with poorer channel conditions can be guaranteed since the transmit power allocated to other users is constrained following the concept of cognitive radio networks. Because of this constraint, CR-NOMA exhibits a different behavior compared with F-NOMA. For example, for the user with the best channel condition, CR-NOMA prefers to pair it with the user with the second best channel condition, whereas the user with the worst channel condition is preferred by F-NOMA.

Impact of User Pairing on 5G Nonorthogonal Multiple-Access Downlink Transmissions

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have recently attracted large research interest, since the huge available bandwidth can potentially lead to the rates of multiple gigabit per second per user Though mmWave can be readily used in stationary scenarios, such as indoor hotspots or backhaul, it is challenging to use mmWave in mobile networks, where the transmitting/receiving nodes may be moving, channels may have a complicated structure, and the coordination among multiple nodes is difficult To fully exploit the high potential rates of mmWave in mobile networks, lots of technical problems must be addressed This paper presents a comprehensive survey of mmWave communications for future mobile networks (5G and beyond) We first summarize the recent channel measurement campaigns and modeling results Then, we discuss in detail recent progresses in multiple input multiple output transceiver design for mmWave communications After that, we provide an overview of the solution for multiple access and backhauling, followed by the analysis of coverage and connectivity Finally, the progresses in the standardization and deployment of mmWave for mobile networks are discussed

Millimeter Wave Communications for Future Mobile Networks

It has been projected that, in the next decade, a mobile traffic increase on the order of 1,000 times is expected compared to what we experience today. To meet that dramatic traffic growth, next-generation mobile networks are also expected to achieve a 1,000-fold capacity increase compared to the current generation of wireless network deployments. In this article, we discuss how such capacity growth could be achieved in a ten-year time frame. We discuss the techniques that we expect to have the highest opportunity for increasing the system capacity and estimate their gains based on analysis and simulation. We observe that the main driver of capacity growth is expected to come from network architecture advancements, with heterogeneous networks and convergence of information and communication technology being two of the key techniques. We also estimate that the air-interface evolution would focus not only on improving the link and system spectrum efficiency but also on facilitating the required network efficiency improvements. This article provides insights into the communication technology evolution and can be used as a guideline for technology development toward the fifth generation (5G).

5G Network Capacity: Key Elements and Technologies

A device uses a first protocol to incorporate a reservation of a medium using a second protocol within the bounds of the first protocol. For example, an evolved node B (also known as an e node B or eNB) using a long term evolution over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) protocol can be configured to reserve unlicensed spectrum using a (wireless local area network) WLAN message placed within a muting gap within the LAA protocol. In one embodiment, the eNB selects to broadcast the WLAN reservation message using a set of options including: (1) from a control channel region of LAA, (2) from a muting gap indicated by a reservation muting symbol pattern indicator, (3) from a time division duplex (TDD) guard period (GP), (4) from a TDD uplink pilot time slot (UpPTS), (5) from an empty uplink (UL) subframe or (6) from a sounding reference signal (SRS).

Systems, methods and devices for channel reservation

A remote radio unit (RRU) in a radio base station system can include a cyclic prefix (CP) module having a CP adder for downlink channel processing includes a CP remover for uplink channel processing. The RRU can be configured to communicate with a base band unit (BBU) via a physical communication link and communicate with a wireless mobile device via an air interface. The BBU can be configured for media access control (MAC) layer processing.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) in unlicensed spectrum is an emerging topic in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which is about an operation of the LTE system in the unlicensed spectrum via license-assisted carrier aggregation. The 5 GHz Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) bands are currently under consideration, but these bands are also occupied by Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), specifically those based on the IEEE 802.11a/n/ac technologies. Therefore, an appropriate coexistence mechanism must be augmented to guarantee a peaceful coexistence with the incumbent systems. With this regard, our focus lies on the evaluation of all the proposed coexistence mechanisms so far in a single framework and making a fair comparison of them. The coexistence mechanisms covered in this work includes static muting, listen-before-talk (LBT), and other sensing-based schemes that make a use of the existing WLAN channel reservation protocol.
