With an ageing population, war, and sports related injuries there is an ever-expanding requirement for hard tissue replacement such as bone. Engineered artificial scaffold biomaterials with appropriate mechanical properties, surface chemistry and surface topography are in a great demand for enhancing cell attachment, cell growth and tissue formation at such defect sites. Most of these engineering techniques are aimed at mimicking the natural organization of the bone tissues and thereby create a conducive environment for bone regeneration. As the interaction between the cells and tissues with biomaterials at the tissue–implant interface is a surface phenomenon, surface properties play a major role in determining both the biological response to implants and the material response to the physiological condition. Hence surface engineering of biomaterials is aimed at modifying the material and biological responses through changes in surface properties while still maintaining the bulk mechanical properties of the implant. Therefore, there has been a great thrust towards development of Ca–P-based surface coatings on various metallic and nonmetallic substrates for load bearing implant applications such as hip joint prosthesis, knee joint prosthesis and dental implants. Typical coating methodologies like ion beam assisted deposition, plasma spray deposition, pulsed laser physical vapor deposition, magnetron sputtering, sol–gel derived coatings, electrodeposition, micro-arc oxidation and laser deposition are extensively studied at laboratory scale. In the present article, attempts are made to give an overview of the basic principles behind the coating techniques as well as advantageous features such as bioactivity and biocompatibility associated with these coatings. Since cells are sensitive to topographical features ranging from mesoscale to nanoscale, formation of these features by both pulsed and continuous wave Nd:YAG laser system will be highlighted. This can also be regarded as advancement towards third generation biomaterials which are bioinert, bioactive and which once implanted will stimulate cell adhesion, proliferation and growth at the interface. Further, an overview of various bio-implants and bio-devices and materials used for these kinds of devices, performance factors such as mechanical and corrosion behavior and surface science associated with these materials are also explained. As the present article is aimed at describing the multidisciplinary nature of this exciting field it also provides a common platform to understand this subject in a simple way for students, researchers, teachers and engineers in the fields ranging from medicine, dentistry, biology, materials science, biomedicine, biomechanics to physics.

Calcium phosphate coatings for bio-implant applications: Materials, performance factors, and methodologies

In the past few decades, technology has made immeasurable strides to enable visualization, identification, and quantitation in biological systems. Many of these technological advancements are occurring on the nanometer scale, where multiple scientific disciplines are combining to create new materials with enhanced properties. The integration of inorganic synthetic methods with a size reduction to the nano-scale has lead to the creation of a new class of optical reporters, called quantum dots. These semiconductor quantum dot nanocrystals have emerged as an alternative to organic dyes and fluorescent proteins, and are brighter and more stable against photobleaching than standard fluorescent indicators. Quantum dots have tunable optical properties that have proved useful in a wide range of applications from multiplexed analysis such as DNA detection and cell sorting and tracking, to most recently demonstrating promise for in vivo imaging and diagnostics. This review provides an in-depth discussion of past, present, and future trends in quantum dot use with an emphasis on in vivo imaging and its related applications.

Recent progress in synthesis, properties and potential applications of SiC nanomaterials

In this review, the emerging roles of group IV nanoparticles including silicon, diamond, silicon carbide, and germanium are summarized and discussed from the perspective of biologists, engineers, and medical practitioners. The synthesis, properties, and biological applications of these new nanomaterials have attracted great interest in the past few years. They have gradually evolved into promising biomaterials due to their innate biocompatibility; toxic ions are not released when they are used in vitro or in vivo, and their wide fluorescence spectral regions span the near-infrared, visible, and near-ultraviolet ranges. Additionally, they generally have good resistance against photobleaching and have lifetimes on the order of nanoseconds to microseconds, which are suitable for bioimaging. Some of the materials possess unique mechanical, chemical, or physical properties, such as ultrachemical and thermal stability, high hardness, high photostability, and no blinking. Recent data have revealed the superiority of these nanoparticles in biological imaging and drug delivery.

Characterization of Al2O3 ceramic coatings on 6063 aluminum alloy prepared in borate electrolytes by micro-arc oxidation

We have investigated the role of the solvents in the luminescence from colloidal 3C-SiC suspensions. By dispersing electrochemically etched polycrystalline 3C-SiC wafers in water, ethanol, or toluene, we have fabricated suspensions of 3C-SiC nanocrystals that exhibit intense photoluminescence. By taking into account the quantum confinement effect and observed size distributions of the 3C-SiC crystallites, a simple model is formulated to explain the photoluminescence spectra. Our results show that the colloidal 3C-SiC nanocrystals are robust and intense emitters that have good chemical stability and biocompatibility. They are thus useful in biotechnology and nano-optoelectronics applications.

Luminescence from colloidal 3C-SiC nanocrystals in different solvents

We studied the photodynamics of the different-sized colloidal cubic SiC nanocrystals in distinct polar and nonpolar solvents. The UV-visible absorption spectral study indicates that the SiC nanocrystals with an average size of 4 nm retain an indirect energy gap; whereas the smaller quantum dots about 1 nm in size exhibit discrete and sharp absorption features indicating their discrete energy levels and the result agrees well with theoretical results. The colloidal SiC nanocrystals exhibit triple-exponential photoluminescence decay with nanosecond-order lifetimes which show slight size-dependence.

Excitation and recombination photodynamics in colloidal cubic SiC nanocrystals

We observed stable photoluminescence from close-packed cubic SiC nanocrystals that are self-assembled into thin solid film. The peak wavelength shifts from blue to near UV with increasing excitation energy and follows well the quantum-confinement effect. The photoluminescence excitation spectrum indicates a 3.47 eV bandgap corresponding to a particle size of 2.3 nm. The nanocrystal film shows triple-exponential photoluminescence decay with lifetimes of 2.3, 8.5, and 36.9 ns. The results open the possibility of the solid state UV-blue light emitting by use of the SiC nanocrystals in photonics and photonics/electronics integration.
