Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Pavement engineering materials: Review on the use of warm-mix asphalt

Asphalt is the most recycled material in the USA at a re-use rate of 99%. However, by average only 10–20% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is used in a given mix design and large part of the RAP is degraded for use in lower value applications. The amount of RAP in asphalt mixtures can be significantly increased with the application of good RAP management practice, readily available modern production technologies and advanced knowledge of mix design. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art approaches for increasing the amount of RAP in asphalt mixtures above 40%. The production challenges and common pavement distresses of very high RAP content mixtures are identified and methods to optimise the mix design as well as production technology in order to allow manufacturing of such sustainable mixtures are described. The best practices for RAP management and economic benefits of high RAP use are also discussed.

Plastic waste use as aggregate and binder modifier in open-graded asphalts

Atualmente, e com o desenvolvimento constante da sociedade, o aumento excessivo da utilizacao dos recursos naturais tem-se tornado um tema de grande preocupacao. Nesse sentido, a reutilizacao dos materiais existentes e uma solucao viavel que se tem tornado cada vez mais comum. No que respeita a industria da construcao, nomeadamente a industria de pavimentacao, a reciclagem de materiais e uma questao que assume uma importância ainda mais relevante, pois a reutilizacao do material fresado (MF) dos pavimentos permite a reducao de custos e do impacto ambiental das atividades de pavimentacao. Contudo, a incorporacao de MF na producao de novas misturas pode causar alguns problemas devido as caracteristicas do betume envelhecido presente no MF, sendo o uso de aditivos rejuvenescedores uma forma de contornar este problema. Neste estudo foram estudados tres rejuvenescedores e dois ligantes diferentes, tendo-se concluido que os rejuvenescedores testados apresentam resultados semelhastes em termos de modificacao das misturas.

Avaliação do desempenho de misturas betuminosas recicladas com elevadas taxas de material fresado

The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in road related applications helps road authorities to achieve their goal of a sustainable road transport system by reducing waste and resource consumption. The use of RAP in hot mix asphalt applications has environmental and economic benefits, and the performance could also be satisfactory. However, problems of workability and durability can be also observed, especially in recycled asphalts with high RAP contents. Thus, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the merit of some rejuvenator agents to improve the performance of recycled asphalts and the properties of their aged binders. The rejuvenator agents used in this study were a commercial product and one used engine oil. Several blends of oxidized bitumens with the referred rejuvenator agents were prepared in order to simulate mixtures with 100 per cent RAP. These binders were characterized through their basic properties (Pen, R&B) and dynamic viscosity at high temperatures. Then, some recycled asphalts were produced with the best previously observed combinations, and their workability, durability and stiffness performance was assessed. The main conclusion of this paper is that the rejuvenator agents enable the use of high RAP contents on recycled asphalts with better performance.
