Entropy stable high order discontinuous Galerkin methods with suitable quadrature rules for hyperbolic conservation laws

Higher-order finite element methods.

This article reviews the state of the recently developed discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the efficient numerical treatment of nanophotonic systems. This approach combines the accurate and flexible spatial discretisation of classical finite elements with efficient time stepping capabilities. We describe in detail the underlying principles of the discontinuous Galerkin technique and its application to the simulation of complex nanophotonic structures. In addition, formulations for both time- and frequency-domain solvers are provided and specific advantages and limitations of the technique are discussed. The potential of the discontinuous Galerkin approach is illustrated by modelling and simulating several experimentally relevant systems.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods in nanophotonics

We present a program for computing symmetric quadrature rules on triangles and tetrahedra. A set of rules are obtained by using this program. Quadrature rules up to order 21 on triangles and up to order 14 on tetrahedra have been obtained which are useful for use in finite element computations. All rules presented here have positive weights with points lying within the integration domain.

Shale gas has become one of the primary energy resources during the past few years, and its impact has been profound in many countries. Hydraulic fracturing treatments are required for the development of shale gas reservoirs, and the consequent hydraulic fractures usually connect with the original small-scale natural fractures forming complex fracture networks in these reservoirs. Therefore, a model for numerical simulation, which is capable of accurately modeling naturally and hydraulically fractured reservoirs, is essential in optimization and management of such reservoirs. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive model that couples embedded discrete fractures, multiple interacting continua, and geomechanics to accurately simulate the fluid flow in shale gas reservoirs with multiscale fractures.
