Metamaterials are materials typically engineered with novel or artificial structures to produce electromagnetic properties that are unusual or difficult to obtain in nature. Because of their promise to provide engineerable permittivity, permeability, and index of refraction, metamaterials have drawn broad interest and have led to possible utilization in many electromagnetic applications from the microwave to optical regime, especially for the radiated-wave devices. This paper presents a detailed review upon the most recent research efforts associated with those metamaterial-based small antennas. They are discussed and classified in several different categories such as the antennas based on dispersion engineering, metaresonators, and metamaterial loadings. Some practical difficulties or limitations for the development of metamaterial-based small antennas are pointed out and the possible approaches to resolve these problems are also illustrated. A wide variety of antenna examples are included to facilitate the understanding for general readers.

Metamaterial-Based Antennas

An investigation into the design of compact patch antennas loaded with complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) and reactive impedance surface (RIS) is presented in this study. The CSRR is incorporated on the patch as a shunt LC resonator providing a low resonance frequency and the RIS is realized using the two-dimensional metallic patches printed on a metal-grounded substrate. Both the meta-resonator (CSRR) and the meta-surface (RIS) are able to miniaturize the antenna size. By changing the configuration of the CSRRs, multi-band operation with varied polarization states can be obtained. An equivalent circuit has been developed for the CSRR-loaded patch antennas to illustrate their working principles. Six antennas with different features are designed and compared, including a circularly-polarized antenna, which validate their versatility for practical applications. These antennas are fabricated and tested. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulation.

Design and Characterization of Miniaturized Patch Antennas Loaded With Complementary Split-Ring Resonators

A new approach to reducing the monostatic radar cross section (RCS) and preserving the radiation characteristics of a slot array antenna by employing polarization conversion metasurfaces (PCMs) is presented in this communication. The PCM is arranged in a chessboard configuration consisting of fishbone-shaped element. It is placed on the surface of the slot array antenna. The characteristics and mechanism of the RCS reduction are analyzed. Simulated and experimental results show that the monostatic RCS reduction band of the antenna with PCM ranges between 6.0 and 18.0 GHz for normally impinging both $x$ - and $y$ -polarized waves. The radiation characteristics of the antenna are well preserved simultaneously in terms of the impedance bandwidth, radiation patterns, and realized boresight gains.

Wideband RCS Reduction of a Slot Array Antenna Using Polarization Conversion Metasurfaces

A new approach for the gain enhancement and wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction of an antenna based on the chessboard polarization conversion metasurfaces (CPCMs) is proposed. Compared with the previous low-RCS antennas, high gain and wideband low RCS of a circularly polarized (CP) antenna are achieved simultaneously. The proposed CPCM is the chessboard configuration of the polarization conversion metasurfaces (PCMs), which is made up of adjoining two-layer substrates with three metallic patterns. Low RCS is realized by 180° (±30°) reflection phase variations between two neighboring PCMs. Gain enhancement is achieved by employing a Fabry-Perot cavity, which is constructed by the PCM and the ground of the antenna. The antenna with CPCM operating at the $X$ -band, excited by a sequentially rotated feeding network, is fabricated and measured. Simulated and measured results show that the left-hand CP gain of the antenna with CPCM is at least 3 dB higher than that of the reference antenna from 8.5 to 9.5 GHz and the monostatic RCS is effectively reduced from 6 to 14 GHz.

A Circularly Polarized High-Gain Antenna With Low RCS Over a Wideband Using Chessboard Polarization Conversion Metasurfaces

This communication investigates the application of metamaterial absorber (MA) to waveguide slot antenna to reduce its radar cross section (RCS). A novel ultra-thin MA is presented, and its absorbing characteristics and mechanism are analyzed. The PEC ground plane of waveguide slot antenna is covered by this MA. As compared with the slot antenna with a PEC ground plane, the simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the monostatic and bistatic RCS of waveguide slot antenna are reduced significantly, and the performance of antenna is preserved simultaneously.

RCS Reduction of Waveguide Slot Antenna With Metamaterial Absorber

This letter investigates the application of EBG radar absorbing material (RAM) to asymmetric ridged waveguide slot antenna array to reduce its backward RCS. The EBG RAM is based on the mushroom-like EBG structure loaded with lumped resistances. A ridged waveguide slot antenna array with 4 times 10 slot elements was designed and built, part of the metal ground plane of the array is replaced with this EBG RAM. The measured results show that performance of the antenna array is preserved when EBG RAM is used. At working frequency the backward RCS of antenna array with EBG RAM has dramatically reduced than that of the common antenna array.

RCS Reduction of Ridged Waveguide Slot Antenna Array Using EBG Radar Absorbing Material

A novel kind of circular polarization and dual-frequency linear polarization microstrip antennas is proposed. The designs are based on the anisotropic property of the complementary split ring resonator. When the complementary split ring resonator is etched on the patch of the probe-fed microstrip antenna, the gap orientation asymmetric or symmetric to the current propagating direction will render the antenna to radiate circular polarization waves or dual-frequency linear polarization waves. Details of the experimental results compared with the simulated results are presented and discussed.

Design of Circular/Dual-Frequency Linear Polarization Antennas Based on the Anisotropic Complementary Split Ring Resonator

A novel design of circular polarization microstrip patch antenna based on the complementary split ring resonator is evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. Unlike the previous application of its resonant performance, the non-resonant property of complementary split ring resonator is used as an asymmetric perturbation to excite the square microstrip patch antenna for a good circular polarization radiation. Good agreement is observed between the measurement and simulation results.

Design of circular polarization microstrip patch antennas with complementary split ring resonator

We theoretically deduce the Bragg gap vanishing conditions in one-dimensional photonic crystals and experimentally demonstrate the m=0 band-gap vanishing phenomena at microwave frequencies. In the case of mismatched impedance, the Bragg gap will vanish as long as the discrete modes appear in photonic crystals containing dispersive materials, while for the matched impedance cases, Bragg gaps will always disappear. The experimental results and the simulations agree extremely well with the theoretical expectation.
