The heavy reliance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has caused rising concerns on the sustainability of lithium and transition metal and the ethic issue around mining practice. Developing alternative energy storage technologies beyond lithium has become a prominent slice of global energy research portfolio. The alternative technologies play a vital role in shaping the future landscape of energy storage, from electrified mobility to the efficient utilization of renewable energies and further to large-scale stationary energy storage. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are a promising alternative given its chemical and economic benefits, making a strong competitor to LIBs and sodium-ion batteries for different applications. However, many are unknown regarding potassium storage processes in materials and how it differs from lithium and sodium and understanding of solid–liquid interfacial chemistry is massively insufficient in PIBs. Therefore, there remain outstanding issues to advance the commercial prospects of the PIB technology. This Roadmap highlights the up-to-date scientific and technological advances and the insights into solving challenging issues to accelerate the development of PIBs. We hope this Roadmap aids the wider PIB research community and provides a cross-referencing to other beyond lithium energy storage technologies in the fast-pacing research landscape.

2023 roadmap for potassium-ion batteries

High-voltage potassium-based batteries are promising alternatives for lithium-ion batteries as next-generation energy storage devices. The stability and reversibility of such systems depend largely on the properties of the corresponding electrolytes. This review first presents major challenges for high-voltage electrolytes, such as electrolyte decomposition, parasitic side reactions, and current collector corrosion. Then, the state-of-the-art modification strategies for traditional ester and ether-based organic electrolytes are scrutinized and discussed, including high concentration, localized high concentration/weakly solvating strategy, multi-ion strategy, and addition of high-voltage additives. Besides, research advances of other promising electrolyte systems, such as potassium-based ionic liquids and solid-state-electrolytes are also summarized. Finally, prospective future research directions are proposed to further enhance the oxidative stability and non-corrosiveness of electrolytes for high-voltage potassium batteries.

Reviewing electrochemical stability of ionic liquids-/deep eutectic solvents-based electrolytes in lithium-ion, lithium-metal and post-lithium-ion batteries for green and safe energy

As a class of flexible and designable materials, organic electrode materials would greatly facilitate the progress of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), especially when the dissolution issue is ameliorated. Ionic liquid electrolytes (ILEs) do not merely alleviate the dissolution of organic materials but provide reliable security. Herein, Pillar[5]quinone (P5Q) as the cathode of PIBs is demonstrated for the first time, and the electrochemical performance of two common ILEs is investigated. In the 0.3 M KFSI-PY13FSI electrolyte with better conductivity, the P5Q cathode maintains a large reversible capacity of 232 mAh g-1 (450 Wh kg-1) after 100 cycles at 0.2C at 1.2-4.0 V. When a current density of 2.0C is applied, the cell retains a capacity of 101 mAh g-1 (211 Wh kg-1) after 1000 cycles and 61 mAh g-1 (125 Wh kg-1) even over 5000 cycles. This research would inspire research on organic electrodes and advance the application of PIBs.

Quinone Electrode for Long Lifespan Potassium-Ion Batteries Based on Ionic Liquid Electrolytes.

Although the high‐capacity Si/graphite anode serves to advance the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries, the volume change remains the main disfigurement of Si/graphite anode. Many studies show that crosslinked structure binders tend to play a good inhibitory effect on volume expansion. In this work, a three‐dimensionally covalently cross‐linked and flexible polyimides (C–PI–OH) is successfully synthesized and applied as silicon/graphite anode, which is composed through a tri‐monomer co‐polycondensation and crosslinking process. The as‐formed free carboxylic acid groups and amide groups in C–PI–OH are efficient in structural stability, so the electrode bound by C–PI–OH exhibits the highest peeling strength than C–PI and polyvinylidene fluoride. The flexible network of the C–PI–OH binder is competent for accommodating the volume expansion and contraction of silicon particles during the deintercalation of lithium ion, which helps in the wholeness of solid electrolyte interface film and electrodes, and effectively boosting the cycle stability of the Si/graphite anode.

A flexible network polyimides binder for Si/graphite composite electrode in lithium‐ion batteries

The purpose of this study was to optimize the extraction conditions for separating Co2+ from Ni2+ using N-butylamine phosphinate ionic liquid of [C4H9NH3][Cyanex 272]. A Box–Behnken design of response surface methodology was used to analyze the effects of the initial pH, extraction time, and extraction temperature on the separation factor of Co2+ from sulfuric acid solution containing Ni2+. The concentrations of Co2+ and Ni2+ in an aqueous solution were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The optimized extraction conditions were as follows: an initial pH of 3.7, an extraction time of 55.8 min, and an extraction temperature of 330.4 K. The separation factor of Co2+ from Ni2+ under optimized extraction conditions was 66.1, which was very close to the predicted value of 67.2, and the error was 1.7%. The equation for single-stage extraction with high reliability can be used for optimizing the multi-stage extraction process of Co2+ from Ni2+. The stoichiometry of chemical reaction for ion-exchange extraction was also investigated using the slope method.

A Mini-Review on Methods of Solvent Extraction Kinetics for Heavy Metal Ions

The capacitance characteristics of magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) were studied experimentally based on simulation analysis. The nonlinear relationship between the capacitance of MRFs and electric field frequency was measured by the self-made circuit device. The effects of magnetic induction intensity and particle volume fraction on the capacitance characteristics of MRFs were investigated. The results show that the nonlinear dependence of the capacitance of an MRF on frequency induced by the effect of tunnel current decreases with the increase in frequency. The capacitance of an MRF is directly related to the particle structures. The capacitance of the MRF with a chain particle structure is greater than that of the MRF with a random particle distribution. The smaller the clearance between the adjacent particles, the greater the capacitance of the MRF. The network particle structure and particle contact will reduce the capacitance of an MRF. The capacitance of an MRF increases with the increment of external magnetic field. The capacitance of an MRF with higher particle volume fraction is smaller than that of an MRF with lower particle volume fraction.
