Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches

This research is a preliminary study that aims to find out how the learning process is implemented in the classroom and how the students' learning motivation. The method used in this research is qualitative research method. Methods of data collection in the form of observation and interview. The results of observations made with elementary school teachers in Purbalingga, Indonesia found that in the learning of teachers using lecture methods and learning resources used were books. The use of lecture methods in the learning process does not attract students so students do not understand the material presented and student learning motivation decreased. In addition, students are also more interested in chatting with the classmate, daydreaming, and busy by themselves. Learning resources are always used is a book, where the delivery of all material comes from the book so that students quickly get bored and difficult to understand the material. Interview results make students more interested in the learning process using media other than books. Therefore, another alternative in the learning process is needed to improve students' learning motivation. One alternative is to utilize technology as a medium in the learning process.

The Perception of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skill among Malaysian Undergraduate Students

Teaching undergraduates at tertiary level is surely not an easy task what more when your students are engineering undergraduates who need to be competent not only in the content area but the generic skills as well. Surveys suggest that the generic aspect demand equal if not greater emphasis in order to produce competent marketable graduates. However, in Malaysia many undergraduates come from an exam- oriented schooling system that lacks the ingredient to develop both the content and generic skills. To "add salt to injury" Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), is a new university and half of the academic staff members are young and new to the teaching profession whose teaching approach have been greatly influenced and dependent upon the conventional way they had been taught themselves while studying at school and university - lacking in varieties and mainly lectures! Realizing this alarming situation, in 2005, UTHM formally embarked on a bold yet challenging journey into the world of Problem-based Learning (PBL) involving 30 academic staff from the various faculties who were to become pioneers and form the PBL Task Force of the university. Despite the uncertainty of venturing into new territory these mixed of young and senior lecturers dedicate themselves into making mastering PBL by attending training sessions both locally and abroad, conducting talks with experts in the field, participating in module development workshops and finally putting into practice what they have learned in their own classes for a whole semester. Our findings reveal that not only did the students benefit in the content area but also greatly gain in the equally crucial aspect of human resource development that is the generic skills like leadership, analytical thinking, conflict management, decision making and many skills. They also said that despite the greater amount of work undertaken it was compensated by the huge volume of knowledge, skills and positive values they acquired without which they would have been deprived if learning was mainly using the conventional way that they were used to.

Adopting Problem-based Learning in the Teaching of Engineering Undergraduates: A Malaysian Experience

The rapid development of information technology today has given a new breath toward usage of computer in education. One of the increasingly popular nowadays is a multimedia technology that merges a variety of media such as text, graphics, animation, video and audio controlled by a computer. With this technology, a wide range of multimedia element can be developed to improve the quality of education. For that reason, this study aims to investigate the use of multimedia element based on animated video that was developed for Engineering Drawing subject according to the syllabus of Vocational College of Malaysia. The design for this study was a survey method using a quantitative approach and involved 30 respondents from Industrial Machining students. The instruments used in study is questionnaire with correlation coefficient value (0.83), calculated on Alpha-Cronbach. Data was collected and analyzed descriptive analyzed using SPSS. The study found that multimedia element for animation video was use significant have capable to increase imagination and visualization of student. The implications of this study provide information of use of multimedia element will student effect imagination and visualization. In general, these findings contribute to the formation of multimedia element of materials appropriate to enhance the quality of learning material for engineering drawing.

The use of animation video in teaching to enhance the imagination and visualization of student in engineering drawing

Various studies around the globe indicate lack of soft skills in engineering students, graduating from universities, although the bulk of studies in various disciplines indicate an improvement in various skills through implementation of a problem-based learning (PBL) approach. The purpose of this paper is therefore to identify and determine the effects of PBL in improving and developing soft skills, conflict resolution traits and aspects of enhancing group learning in undergraduates.,A study with mixed methods was used, involving questionnaire, observation and document analysis. A total of 57 students from different faculties participated in the semester-long study. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered at the beginning and end of the study. The researcher attended all the classes to observe systematically the teaching-learning process and its outcomes.,The findings revealed that PBL has a significant effect on improving students’ soft skills and enhancing group learning, including overcoming communication conflicts.,Practical implications of the study involve the enhancement of generic skills of the engineering graduates with the student-centered and interactive methodologies like PBL and e-learning applications.,This research endeavor stands unique due to its usage of e-learning tools in the PBL classroom learning such as Schoology, Padlet, videos, internet surfing. Another unique feature of this research is the holistic nature of the study, i.e. the measurement of a number of soft skills, traits and group learning skills that are not focused in other studies of engineering.

Improving the soft skills of engineering undergraduates in Malaysia through problem-based approaches and e-learning applications

A bulk of studies indicates an improvement of various soft skills through applying problem-based learning (PBL) approach but there is still a dearth of such pedagogies in the Asia region. The core objective of this study was, therefore, to identify the effects of electronic PBL on the soft skills, conflict resolution traits, and aspects of enhancing group learning among undergraduate. Through a mixed method approach, a total 57 students from different faculties at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia participated in the semester-long research study. Pre-test and post-test were administered at the beginning and end of the semester along with observing the sessions and analysing the documents. The computation of mean compared with the standard value of the mean of the pre and post-test revealed the significant effect of PBL on improving the soft skills of the students and enhancing group learning including overcoming communication conflicts. The observation and document analysis supported the findings obtained from the questionnaire.

Study on problem-based learning towards improving soft skills of students in effective communication class

ABSTRAK Teks-teks sejarah Melayu juga kaya dengan cerita dongeng and legenda. Tetapi, banyak sarjana yang mengkaji isi teks itu kerap membuat tanggapan yang salah. Dalam kajian mereka, mereka menetapkan aspek luaran, dan bukannya aspek fungsi dan sejarah pada cerita mitos dan legenda itu. Oleh itu, adalah tujuan rencana ini untuk menerokai pemahaman konsep saya tentang cerita legenda dan mitos dalam teks sejarah klasik Melayu untuk membuktikan adanya kebenaran sejarah yang tersirat di sebalik cerita itu. Untuk tujuan itu, saya telah memilih Sejarah Melayu, Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai dan Hikayat Merong Mahawanga.
