Hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Seaweeds have attracted high interest in recent years due to their chemical and bioactive properties to find new molecules with valuable applications for humankind. Phenolic compounds are the group of metabolites with the most structural variation and the highest content in seaweeds. The most researched seaweed polyphenol class is the phlorotannins, which are specifically synthesized by brown seaweeds, but there are other polyphenolic compounds, such as bromophenols, flavonoids, phenolic terpenoids, and mycosporine-like amino acids. The compounds already discovered and characterized demonstrate a full range of bioactivities and potential future applications in various industrial sectors. This review focuses on the extraction, purification, and future applications of seaweed phenolic compounds based on the bioactive properties described in the literature. It also intends to provide a comprehensive insight into the phenolic compounds in seaweed.

Seaweed Phenolics: From Extraction to Applications.

Severe bone damage from diseases, including extensive trauma, fractures, and bone tumors, cannot self-heal, while traditional surgical treatment may bring side effects such as infection, inflammation, and pain. As a new biomaterial with controllable mechanical properties and biocompatibility, hydrogel is widely used in bone tissue engineering (BTE) as a scaffold for growth factor transport and cell adhesion. In order to make hydrogel more suitable for the local treatment of bone diseases, hydrogel preparation methods should be combined with synthetic materials with excellent properties and advanced technologies in different fields to better control drug release in time and orientation. It is necessary to establish a complete method to evaluate the hydrogel’s properties and biocompatibility with the human body. Moreover, establishment of standard animal models of bone defects helps in studying the therapeutic effect of hydrogels on bone repair, as well as to evaluate the safety and suitability of hydrogels. Thus, this review aims to systematically summarize current studies of hydrogels in BTE, including the mechanisms for promoting bone synthesis, design, and preparation; characterization and evaluation methods; as well as to explore future applications of hydrogels in BTE.

There is a vast number of treatments on the market for the management of wounds and burns, representing a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. These include conventional wound dressings, dressings that incorporate growth factors to stimulate and facilitate the wound healing process, and skin substitutes that incorporate patient-derived cells. This article will review the more established, and the recent advances in the use of biomaterials for wound healing therapies, and their future direction.

Characterization and biological activity of PVA hydrogel containing chitooligosaccharides conjugated with gallic acid

Phlorotannins (PH) derived from brown algae have been shown to have biological effects. However, the application of PH in biomedical materials has not been investigated. Here, we investigated the effects of PH on normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) proliferation and fabricated a composite hydrogel consisting PH and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (PVA/PH) by a freezing-thawing method for wound healing applications. Cell proliferation was significantly higher in the PH-treated (0.01 and 0.02%) cells than in non-treated cells. Based on the mechanical properties, the PVA/PH hydrogel had a significantly increased swelling ratio and ultimate strain compared to the PVA hydrogel, but the ultimate tensile strength and tensile modulus were decreased. Additionally, cell attachment and proliferation on the composites were evaluated using NHDFs. Sargassum fusiforme Fucoidan: Desalination, Components, Antioxidant, and NO Inhibition in LPS-Stimulated RAW 264.7 Macrophages

염생식물이란 육상식물이 서식할 수 없는 고농도의 염분을 함 유하는 해안가, 염분이 있는 호숫가, 암염이 있는 지대 및 만조 때 침수되는 낮은 지대에 서식하는 식물을 말한다(Lee et al., 2012). 이와 같은 염생식물은 육상식물과 달리 해수와 담수의 끊임없는 교차로 인한 염분농도의 잦은 변화와 장기간 침수되 는 환경에서 고농도의 염분을 이용한 삼투압 조절로 세포기능 보호 등 다양한 자기방어 기작을 가진다(Kong et al., 2008). 이 러한 극한환경에 서식하는 염생식물들은 페놀성 화합물을 포함 한 2차 대사산물과 같은 특이적인 생리활성물질들을 다량 함유 하고 있다고 보고되어 있으며, 이를 이용한 약리학적 기능에 대 한 연구가 진행되어 왔으나, 아직까지 미비한 실정이다. 염생식물의 일종인 칠면초(Suaeda japonica)는 명아주과 (Chenopodiaceae)의 일년생 식물로 세계적으로 구분된 해안식 생 중 Sino-Japanese group의 대표 종으로 우리나라에서는 예 부터 식용으로 사용하였으며, 낮게 침수되는 지대부터 건조한 지역까지 서식하며 특히 서해안 갯벌지역에 넓게 분포되어 있 다(Cho et al., 2014). 선행연구에 따르면 칠면초는 항산화(Lee et al., 2012; Lee et al., 2011), 신경염증질병(Kang et al., 2013) 및 간보호(Kim et al., 2010) 에 효능이 있다고 보고된 바 있으 며 한방에서는 해열효과가 있어 식물성 소금 및 천연염료로 사 용하고 있다(Choi et al., 2010; Choi et al., 2009). 반면, 칠면초 가 유용한 생리활성물질을 가짐에도 불구하고 고농도의 염으로 인해 약리학적 이용에 제약을 받고 있다. 염은 세포외액에서 가장 많이 존재하는 전해질로, 체내에서 삼투압(osmolarity)조절, 수분균형과 체액의 양조절, pH조절 및 신경전달 물질 등의 역할을 하는 중요한 인자이다. 그러나 과 도한 염 섭취는 체내에 불균형을 유발하며, 혈액량을 증가시켜 고혈압(hypertension)을 초래하거나 혈중 나트륨농도가 높아 전기투석시스템을 활용한 염생식물 칠면초(Suaeda japonica) 추출물의 염분 표준화에 따른 주요 성분 및 생리활성 비교 연구 박현호·고석천·정원교*
