Dynamic resource allocation scheme is a key component of 3GPP long-term evolution (LTE) for satisfying quality-of-service (QoS) requirement as well as improving the system throughput. In this paper, a buffer-aware adaptive resource allocation scheme for LTE downlink transmission is proposed for improving the overall system throughput while guaranteeing the statistic QoS and keeping certain fairness among users. Specifically, the priorities of the users’ data queues in the base station are ranked by their remaining life time or their queue overflow probability which is estimated by applying large deviation principle. An online measurement based algorithm which requires no statistical knowledge of the network conditions uses the queue priorities to dynamically allocate the resource blocks (RBs) for avoiding buffer overflow and providing statistic QoS guarantee. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the throughput and fairness while considerably reducing the average bit loss rate.

Buffer-aware adaptive resource allocation scheme in LTE transmission systems

The limitation of bandwidth resource in a wireless network has driven a large amount of work in resource scheduling to better utilize the available bandwidth. Most of these work aim to maximize the throughput by considering a uniform user distribution across the cellular network. In reality, users may be distributed non-uniformly. This work studies the effects of nonuniform user distribution on throughput performance for different type of scheduling. Results have shown that the throughput performance is better under a particular user distribution and scheduling.

Influence of Non-Uniform User Distribution on Throughput Performance in Outdoor Macro-Cellular Environment

Providing high capacity wireless networks that are able to support high throughput requirements within the constraint of finite bandwidth resource is crucial and has been the motivation of this work. Received signal quality may vary under different propagation environments due to variation in user location and base station deployment strategy. The investigation and analysis of throughput performance for downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) indoor wireless network is presented in this paper. This investigation requires a cross-layer model that takes into account the received signal quality in the physical layer and resource allocation in the medium access control layer. Results have shown that the coverage performance for an indoor wireless network that adopts the aligned configuration (AC) outperforms the offset configuration (OC) by 18% under a low throughput threshold using either maximum rate or equal allocation scheduling. At high throughput threshold, OC outperforms the AC by up to 33% given that MR is used as the scheduling scheme.

The next generation broadband wireless networks deploy orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) as the enabling technologies for broadband data transmission with QoS capabilities. In such broadband wireless systems, one major issue is how to utilize radio resource efficiently while maintaining fairness between sessions as well as providing adequate QoS. In this work, we propose an approach for OFDMA/time division duplex (TDD) downlink suitable for IEEE802.16e WiMAX systems that combines scheduling and burst mapping algorithms for a trade-off between session fairness, QoS, and spectral efficiency. While optimizing radio resources under QoS and fairness constraints is an NP-hard problem, we follow a heuristic approach that simplifies the complexity of the algorithm. Performance results show that while the new scheme outperforms the Proportional Fair algorithm in terms of fairness, it also improves the overall system spectral efficiency. Joint scheduling and mapping in support of downlink fairness and spectral efficiency in ieee 802.16e OFDMA system

The primary goal of radio resource management (RRM) is to allocate the radio resources to meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements and improve the system performance. In this paper, we propose an uplink scheduling scheme jointing the bandwidth allocation and the excess bandwidth compensation for GBR (real-time) and Non-GBR (non-real-time) traffics in the LTE (Long Term Evolution) wireless network. Besides, both the short-term and long-term periods are also considered to meet the requirements of real-time service. This strategy comprises of two phases including the minimal bandwidth requirement assignment (MBRA), namely Phase 1, and the minimum guarantee and assignment of remaining resource block (ARRB), namely Phase 2. The MBRA serves the Video and VoIP user equipments (UEs) to achieve a superior performance in terms of the packet delay and jitter; and the ARRB is applied for allocating remaining resource blocks (RBs) to the GBR UEs to achieve a higher system throughput by considering the best channel condition and the proportional fairness. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed scheme outperforms the first maximum expansion (FME) and the proportional fair (PF) schemes.
