Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Electrospinning and Electrospun Nanofibers: Methods, Materials, and Applications

In modern society, traffic and transportation and the manufacturing industry and construction industries continuously release large amounts of dust and particles into the atmosphere, which can cause heavy air pollution, leading to health hazards. The haze disaster, a serious problem in developing countries such as China and India, has become one of the main issues of global environmental pollution in recent decades. Many air filtration technologies have been developed. Air filtration using electrospun fibers that intercept fine particles/volatile organic gases/bacterium is a relatively new, but highly promising, technique. Due to their interconnected nanoscale pore structures, highly specific surface areas, fine diameters, and porous structure as well as their ability to incorporate active chemistry on a nanoscale surface, electrospun fibers are becoming a promising versatile platform for air filtration. In this review, following a short introduction concerning the need for air filtration and filtration theory and mechanism, electrospun nanofibers membranes for air filtration have been highlighted, including the preparation (electrospinning process) and the parameters relevant to filtration efficacy. Additionally, various types (function) of the electrospun air filtration membranes have been classified in detail. Furthermore, their potential in the filtration of fine particles and chemical pollutants has been discussed. Finally, the challenges of their practical application and the future prospects have been summarized. Given that some advanced electrospun air filtration nanofibrous membranes exist for treating different contaminants from various types of polluted atmosphere, it is believed that they should make a significant contribution in protection against air pollution.

Electrospun Nanofibers Membranes for Effective Air Filtration

Broadening the application area of the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is one of the research emphases in the study of the TENGs, whose output characteristic is high voltage with low current. Here we design a self-powered electrospinning system, which is composed of a rotating-disk TENG (R-TENG), a voltage-doubling rectifying circuit (VDRC), and a simple spinneret. The R-TENG can generate an alternating voltage up to 1400 V. By using a voltage-doubling rectifying circuit, a maximum constant direct voltage of 8.0 kV can be obtained under the optimal configuration and is able to power the electrospinning system for fabricating various polymer nanofibers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide-6 (PA6), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). The system demonstrates the capability of a TENG for high-voltage applications, such as manufacturing nanofibers by electrospinning.

The need for fully bio-based facemasks to counter coronavirus outbreaks: A perspective.

Ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution jeopardizes both the global climate and public health. Therefore, there is a need for a cost-effective and energy-efficient air filter. Herein, a low filtration resistance polyacrylonitrile (PAN) three-dimensional composite membrane with high porosity was controllably fabricated via multi-jet free surface electrospinning. The composite nanofibrous membrane, composed of ternary structures including scaffold nanofibers, microspheres and thin nanofibers, was demonstrated as an air filter for the first time. The scaffold nanofibers constituted a stable skeletal framework in which the microspheres were embedded; the microspheres enlarged the inter-fiber voids thus greatly reducing the pressure drop, while thin nanofibers with diameters of 84 nm interwoven with the scaffold nanofibers improved the collision probability of the airborne particles and guaranteed a robust filtration performance without sacrificing filtration efficiency. Additionally, the embedded microspheres also significantly improved the mechanical properties of the membrane. The fabricated high porosity three-dimensional composite membrane exhibited high filtration efficiency (99.99%) and low pressure drop (126.7 Pa) to sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles under an airflow velocity of 5.3 cm s−1. Furthermore, the as-prepared membrane demonstrated high PM2.5 filtration efficiency (99.24%) in a dynamic PM2.5 filtration system simulating the typical operation environment of an air filter. The low resistance three-dimensional composite membrane fabricated via free surface electrospinning is not only efficient for laboratory research but can also be applied to industrial production and in commercial applications.

Tough fibrous membranes for smoke filtration have been developed from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles by solution electrospinning. The fibre thicknesses were controlled from 0.4 to 4.3 μm by adjustment of the spinning conditions. The highest fibre strength and toughness were obtained for fibres with an average diameter of 1.0 μm, 62.5 MPa and 65.8 MJ m−3, respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the fibres showed a skewed amorphous halo, whereas the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results revealed an apparent crystallinity of 6–8% for the 0.4 and 1 μm fibres and 0.2% crystallinity for the 4.3 μm fibres. Heat shrinkage experiments were conducted by exposing the fibres to a temperature above their glass transition temperature (Tg). The test revealed a remarkable capability of the thinnest fibres to shrink by 50%, which was in contrast to the 4.3 μm fibres, which displayed only 4% shrinkage. These thinner fibres also showed a significantly higher glass transition temperature (+15 °C) than that of the 4.3 μm fibres. The results suggested an internal morphology with a high degree of molecular orientation in the amorphous segments along the thinner fibres, consistent with a constrained mesomorphic phase formed during their rapid solidification in the electric field. Air filtration was demonstrated with cigarette smoke as a model substance passed through the fibre mats. The 0.4 μm fibres showed the most effective smoke filtration and a capacity to absorb 43× its own weight in smoke residuals, whereas the 1 μm fibres showed the best combination of filtration capacity (32×) and mechanical robustness. The use of recycled PET in the form of nanofibres is a novel way of turning waste into higher-value products.
