Meta-analysis of therapeutic relationship variables in youth and family therapy: the evidence for different relationship variables in the child and adolescent treatment outcome literature.

Background Children looked after by local authorities are at higher risk of poor psychosocial outcomes than children living in private households, but nationally representative and random samples of the two groups of children have not previously been compared.

Aims To find explanations for the increased prevalence of psychiatric disorder in children looked after by local authorities.

Method We examined socio-demographic characteristics and psychopathology by type of placement among children looked after in Britain by local authorities ( n =1453), and compared these children with deprived and non-deprived children living in private households ( n =10 428).

Results Children looked after by local authorities had higher levels of psychopathology, educational difficulties and neurodevelopmental disorders, and ‘looked after’ status was independently associated with nearly all types of psychiatric disorder after adjusting for these educational and physical factors. The prevalence of psychiatric disorder was particularly high among those living in residential care and with many recent changes of placement.

Conclusions Our findings indicate a need for greater support of this vulnerable group of children.

Psychiatric disorder among British children looked after by local authorities: comparison with children living in private households

The Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) is a short 28-item questionnaire for assessing the existence and severity of sexual problems. The design, construction, and item analysis of the GRISS are described. The two separate male and female scales are shown to have high split-half reliabilities of 0.94 for women and 0.87 for men. Validation of change scores in the GRISS on 30 clinical couples, before and after therapy, showed correlations with therapists' blind ratings of 0.54 (p <0.001)for men and 0.43 (p <0.01)for women. Discriminatory validity between clinical (n =69)and nonclinical (n =59)groups was r =0.63 for women and r =0.37 for men. The 12 subscales of impotence, premature ejaculation, anorgasmia, vaginismus, noncommunication, infrequency, male and female avoidance, male and female nonsensuality, and male and female dissatisfaction are also shown to have good reliability and validity.

A systematic review of sexual satisfaction

Research in marital therapy has been disadvantaged by the lack of a good, short and recent psychometric questionnaire to objectively assess the state of a marriage for research, demographic and clinical purposes. The Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) is a companion questionnaire to the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS), and concentrates on aspects other than the sexual in a dyadic relationship between two adults living together. It is a 28 item psychometrically constructed inventory designed to produce a single scale along which changes in a marriage may develop as marital therapy progresses. It has been shown to be valid for this purpose, and to have a good reliability.

The GRIMS. A psychometric instrument for the assessment of marital discord

The Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) is a new short (28 item) questionnaire for the assessment of the quality of a relationship. The GRIMS is a companion test to the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) which is in use in sex therapy and sexual dysfunction clinics and research. Its development and construction are described, together with details of item analysis and other psychometric procedures. The scale, which can be used for either men or women, has good reliability (.90 for women and .92 for men). Content and face validity are good. Some evidence of discriminative validity is also given. The GRIMS will have clinical and research application for marriage guidance and marital therapy clinics. Some further consideration is given to various differences between men and women in their perceptions of a good relationship.

The Therapeutic Relationship in Behavioural Psychotherapy

We explored the experiences of a group of participants with craniofacial conditions before, during, and after orthognathic surgery. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, recorded, transcribed, and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, and purposive sampling focused on a homogenous group was selected. Participants described unpleasant experiences related to their appearance, the difficulties they had in adjusting to facial changes as a result of surgery, and the differences these changes had made to their body image. The superordinate themes identified after interpretive phenomenological analysis were: self-awareness of facial appearance; attitudes of others and facial appearance; treatment issues; impact of surgery; and support and coping. The accounts provide information about living with an unusual appearance, medical aspects of facial operations over time, changes in body image before, during, and after operation, and the effects of support and coping styles on resilience.
