Journal ArticleDOI
Renal failure and bacterial infections in patients with cirrhosis: epidemiology and clinical features.
Silvano Fasolato,Paolo Angeli,Lucia Dallagnese,Giulio Maresio,Erika Zola,Elena Mazza,F. Salinas,Silvio Donà,Stefano Fagiuoli,Antonietta Sticca,Giacomo Zanus,Umberto Cillo,Ilaria Frasson,C. Destro,Angelo Gatta +14 more
TL;DR: The results of the study show that the development of bacterial‐induced renal failure in patients with cirrhosis and ascites is related to the MELD score, and to both the severity and the lack of resolution of the infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Dynamic G-Quadruplex Region Regulates the HIV-1 Long Terminal Repeat Promoter
Rosalba Perrone,Matteo Nadai,Ilaria Frasson,Jerrod A. Poe,Elena Butovskaya,Thomas E. Smithgall,Manlio Palumbo,Giorgio Palù,Sara N. Richter +8 more
TL;DR: The possibility of inhibiting the HIV-1 LTR promoter by G-quadruplex-interacting small molecules is disclosed, providing a new pathway to development of anti-HIV-1 drugs with unprecedented mechanism of action.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nucleolin stabilizes G-quadruplex structures folded by the LTR promoter and silences HIV-1 viral transcription
Elena Tosoni,Ilaria Frasson,Matteo Scalabrin,Rosalba Perrone,Elena Butovskaya,Matteo Nadai,Giorgio Palù,Dan Fabris,Sara N. Richter +8 more
TL;DR: The data indicate that nucleolin possesses a specific and regulated activity toward the HIV-1 LTR promoter, which is mediated by G-quadruplexes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Formation of a Unique Cluster of G-Quadruplex Structures in the HIV-1 nef Coding Region: Implications for Antiviral Activity
Rosalba Perrone,Matteo Nadai,Jerrod A. Poe,Ilaria Frasson,Manlio Palumbo,Giorgio Palù,Thomas E. Smithgall,Sara N. Richter +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided of the first evidence of the possibility to regulate HIV-1 gene expression and infectivity through G-quadruplex targeting and therefore open a new avenue for viral treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Synthesis, Binding and Antiviral Properties of Potent Core-Extended Naphthalene Diimides Targeting the HIV-1 Long Terminal Repeat Promoter G-Quadruplexes.
Rosalba Perrone,Filippo Doria,Elena Butovskaya,Ilaria Frasson,Silvia Botti,Matteo Scalabrin,Sara Lago,Vincenzo Grande,Matteo Nadai,Mauro Freccero,Sara N. Richter +10 more
TL;DR: This work synthesized naphthalene diimide derivatives with a lateral expansion of the aromatic core that were able to bind/stabilize the G-quadruplex to a high extent, and some of them displayed clear-cut selectivity toward the viral G- Quadruplexes with respect to the human telomeric G- quadruplexe.
