This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. To facilitate the implementation of lean production, practitioners and researchers have suggested an array of critical success factors (CSFs). However, despite a broad consensus about what needs to be done, companies still struggle to implement lean. Contingency theory posits the explanation that the common advice is not universal but is instead contingent on the situation. This paper investigates how contingency variables influence what practitioners see as success factors for implementing lean. A survey asked 432 practitioners from 83 factories belonging to two multinational companies for their opinions about what managers should do to ensure the success of the factory-level implementation of lean production. Total productive maintenance: literature review and directions

Purpose




The purpose of this paper is to present the comprehensive literature review on 5S and suggest possible gaps from the point of view of researchers and practitioners. The manuscript presents the overview of 5S implementation and highlights the achievements realized from deployment of 5S initiatives for sustainable performance of organizations.




Design/methodology/approach




The paper critically examines the literature on 5S, analyzes and reviews it systematically. The study highlights the critical barriers and success factors for sustainable 5S implementation in the organizations in the competitive world.




Findings




5S is an outstanding Japanese philosophy for the development of any type organization all over the world. This study bring out the concept of 5S, requirements for its holistic implementation, relationship with other lean tools, benefits, success factors and obstacles in 5S implementation. The significant contributions through 5S initiatives in the organization like production, quality, safety and effective utilization of workspace for the sustained organizational improvement have also been highlighted in the study.




Practical implications




The literature on assortment of 5S technique has been so far very limited. The present paper reviews large number of research publications related to 5S to highlight the significance of 5S philosophy in the sustainable organizational improvement across the world. It foregrounds the approach advised by the various researchers, practitioners and appraises censoriously the reason behind the demand of 5S program in the organization. The needful steps and obstacles are also foreground for the effective implementation of 5S in the organization.




Originality/value




The paper presents a comprehensive review of literature publications in the area of 5S and their assortment to develop an understanding of the significance and implementation of 5S in the organizations. The paper will be helpful or useful to researchers, safety executives, development professionals and managers in the organizations.

5S – a quality improvement tool for sustainable performance: literature review and directions

Hard turning is used in the manufacturing industry as an economic alternative to grinding, but the reliability of hard turning processes is often unpredictable. The main factors affecting the reliability of hard turning are surface integrity and tool wear. In the present study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of cutting parameters on surface roughness, tool wear, and residual stress distribution in hard turning. This article brings out the comprehensive analysis of the effects of cutting parameters on surface roughness, residual stress, and tool wear.

Residual Stresses, Surface Roughness, and Tool Wear in Hard Turning: A Comprehensive Review

In machining of parts, surface quality is one of the most specified customer requirements. Major indication of surface quality on machined parts is surface roughness. There are various machining parameters which have an effect on the surface roughness, but these effects have not been adequately quantified. In order for manufacturers to maximize their gains from utilizing finish hard turning, accurate predictive models for surface roughness and tool wear must be constructed. This paper utilizes response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling to predict surface roughness and tool wear for variety of cutting conditions in finish hard turning. The experimental data obtained from performed experiments in finish turning of hardened AISI H-11 steel have been utilized. Decrease in feed rate and increase in cutting speed resulted in significant increase in surface quality. However, increase in cutting speed also produced relatively higher tool wear. Also depth of cut did not significantly affect the tool wear and surface roughness.

Influence of cutting parameters on tool wear and surface roughness in hard turning of AISI H11 tool steel using ceramic tools

Purpose




The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of 5S initiatives as a facilitator of accruing business excellence in the manufacturing organizations.




Design/methodology/approach




The study involves empirical investigation of 92 manufacturing organizations to evaluate the contributions of 5S initiatives toward accruing business performance excellence in the respondent organizations. The study involves nine significant stimulants for 5S implementation and seven crucial performance parameters leading to realization of business excellence in manufacturing organizations.




Findings




The results clearly indicate close association between the significant nine stimulants for 5S implementation and seven crucial business excellence performance parameters. The study also establishes that 5S initiatives can significantly facilitate achievement of business excellence in the manufacturing organizations.




Originality/value




The study deploys various statistical and validation techniques to evaluate the contributions of effective 5S approach as a facilitator for accruing business excellence in manufacturing organizations.
