This study analyzes the technologies most widely used to work on areas affected by the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Technologies can focus on the strengths and weaknesses of this disorder as they make it possible to create controlled environments, reducing the anxiety produced by real social situations. Extensive research has proven the efficiency of technologies as support tools for therapy and their acceptation by ASD sufferers and the people who are with them on a daily basis. This article is organized by the types of systems developed: virtual reality applications, telehealth systems, social robots and dedicated applications, all of which are classified by the areas they center on: communication, social learning and imitation skills and other ASD-associated conditions. 40.5% of the research conducted is found to be focused on communication as opposed to 37.8% focused on learning and social imitation skills and 21.6% which underlines problems associated with this disorder. Although most of the studies reveal how useful these tools are in therapy, they are generic tools for ASD sufferers in general, which means there is a lack of personalised tools to meet each person's needs.

Technologies as Support Tools for Persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Autistic children are increasingly a focus of technology research within the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community. We provide a critical review of the purposes of these technologies and how they discursively conceptualise the agency of autistic children. Through our analysis, we establish six categories of these purposes: behaviour analysis, assistive technologies, education, social skills, therapy and well-being. Further, our discussion of these purposes shows how the technologies embody normative expectations of a neurotypical society, which predominantly views autism as a medical deficit in need of ‘correction’. Autistic children—purportedly the beneficiaries of these technologies—thus become a secondary audience to the largely externally defined purposes. We identify a lack of design for technologies that are geared towards the interests, needs and desires of autistic children. To move HCI’s research into autism beyond this, we provide guidance on how to consider agency in use and explicitly allow for appropriation beyond externally driven goals.

Development of Support Applications for Elderly and Handicapped People with ICT Infrastructure

By the development and diffusion of smart phones, such as iPhone or Android, there are attempts to adopt smart phones as supporting tools for handicapped children recently. We developed a schedule application, "Smiley". We aimed to give the user an opportunity to feel a sense of accomplishment and a motive to try something by him/herself by using this application. Based on this application, we developed new applications called "Iikoto Ippai" and "1punpun"."Iikoto-Ippai" is an application to be use as a token economy tool for the purpose of support to enhance the autonomy and independence of autistic children. Token economy is a method to give a token when someone do appropriate behavior and reward him/her when he/she collects curtain amount of tokens. By using this application repeatedly, they feel not only the joy to get the reward, but also the meaning to achieve the goal and began to make more efforts. "1punpun" is a timer application for teachers of special support schools to use when they give instructions of activities and works to autistic children. Some autistic children tend to become anxious or panic when they cannot understand length of the time of activities or works. This application can provide a visual representation of the time. They began to understand the processes by using this application and were able to finish works by set time without causing a panic. In this study, we examine autism and its education for the handicapped children. Further, we explain the important points to develop these applications. Then we describe the usage instructions and functions of them. In the latter half of this paper, we show the data of the hearing investigation, which was carried out at a special support school in Aichi, Japan.

Development of Smart Devices Applications for Autistic Children

The custom to gaze at screens of PC and smart phones has become common in daily life and it causes increase the symptom of dry eye syndrome. The purpose of this study is to develop a new monitor system to catch an eye area by using a front camera of a tablet, to visualize the opening and closing rate of the blink and to reduce eyestrain and to alert dry eye syndrome. Then, the image processing techniques are developed. The amount of tears was measured by phenol red cotton yarn. Finally, the relation of VDT works (Visual Display Terminals) and the eyestrain has been studied, in which the VDT consists of a display and a keyboard.

Development of Monitor System for Dry Eye Symptom

Dimension or variables reduction of data is an important problem and the reduction is needed for the analysis of higher dimensional data in the application domain. Rough set is fundamental and useful to reduce higher dimensional data to lower one for the classification. We develop a generation method of incremental reducts based on nearest neighbor relations and linear classifications using added data. First, the nearest neighbor relation is shown to play a fundamental role for the approximated reducts. Next, the complete reducts are generated on the degenerate convex cones, in which edge operations are performed. Finally, the incremental reducts are generated using the linear classification and the nearest neighbor relations on the convex cones.

Incremental Reducts Based on Nearest Neighbor Relations and Linear Classifications

Dimension reduction of data is an important theme in the data processing to represent and manipulate higher dimensional data. Rough set is fundamental and useful to process higher dimensional data. Reduct in the rough set is a minimal subset of features, which has almost the same discernible power as the entire features in the higher dimensional scheme. Combination of multi-reducts is effective for parallel processing of the classification. Nearest neighbor relation between different classes has a b asic information for classification. We propose here a multireduct parallel processing classification scheme with efficient and higher accuracy by using nearest neighbor relation. To improve the classification ability of reducts, we develop a generation method of reducts and its graph mapping method by using the nearest neighbor relation, which is based on characteristics of the weighted reducts for the classification. Further, a dependency relation and an embedding of nearest neighbor relation are proposed to improve the classification accuracy.
