This study analyzes the technologies most widely used to work on areas affected by the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Technologies can focus on the strengths and weaknesses of this disorder as they make it possible to create controlled environments, reducing the anxiety produced by real social situations. Extensive research has proven the efficiency of technologies as support tools for therapy and their acceptation by ASD sufferers and the people who are with them on a daily basis. This article is organized by the types of systems developed: virtual reality applications, telehealth systems, social robots and dedicated applications, all of which are classified by the areas they center on: communication, social learning and imitation skills and other ASD-associated conditions. 40.5% of the research conducted is found to be focused on communication as opposed to 37.8% focused on learning and social imitation skills and 21.6% which underlines problems associated with this disorder. Although most of the studies reveal how useful these tools are in therapy, they are generic tools for ASD sufferers in general, which means there is a lack of personalised tools to meet each person's needs.

Technologies as Support Tools for Persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Autistic children are increasingly a focus of technology research within the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community. We provide a critical review of the purposes of these technologies and how they discursively conceptualise the agency of autistic children. Through our analysis, we establish six categories of these purposes: behaviour analysis, assistive technologies, education, social skills, therapy and well-being. Further, our discussion of these purposes shows how the technologies embody normative expectations of a neurotypical society, which predominantly views autism as a medical deficit in need of ‘correction’. Autistic children—purportedly the beneficiaries of these technologies—thus become a secondary audience to the largely externally defined purposes. We identify a lack of design for technologies that are geared towards the interests, needs and desires of autistic children. To move HCI’s research into autism beyond this, we provide guidance on how to consider agency in use and explicitly allow for appropriation beyond externally driven goals.

Agency of Autistic Children in Technology Research—A Critical Literature Review

Prevalence of dry eye disease among Japanese visual display terminal users

Recently, the decreasing birthrate and aging society has advanced along with the rapid development of medical technology in Japan. Many Japanese want to live at home with old age and the number of elderly people living alone also steadily increases. Solitary deaths of elderly people living alone become an issue in such situation and it is necessary to take measures to cope with the situation. Some products to prevent solitary deaths utilizing information technology have been released already in Japan. However, most of them are not widely used because maintenance or introduction costs are quite high. In this paper, we state the development of the medical record system equipped with a simple automatic inquiry function to manage the health of the elderly living alone, "Otassha Tsushin", and the mobile application to prevent solitary deaths, "Anshin", to distribute to elderly people living alone and their families and supporters.

Application of Information Technology to Develop the System for Solitary Death

In this study, the development of the objectivity index for the diagnosis of the autistic children with a lack of the communication ability and an evaluation of the curative effect using the ocular movement measurement is discussed. In past study, we developed communication applications \"Eye Talk\" and \"Eye Tell\" for people who have difficulty in conversation and writing such as children with physical disability, ALS patients or elderlies using the blink determination system. The team of Dr. Kitazawa in Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences in Osaka University performed the clinical application to distinguish autism group by measuring \"where and when\" he/she looks at using Tobii eye trucker. Our study is a judgment by the ocular movement measurement. We developed the image processing technique by afterimage used in the blink determination. First, the eye area is captured by a front camera of laptop PC. Second, we extracted the pixels of pupils with 30-40 fps of accuracy and digitized eyeball movements. We converted the difference in eyeball movements between the right and left eyes into a graph and define it in multidimensional measure. We measured the amount of the degree that the eyes of the subject run off the track based on the afterimage, then added up the amount of change of right and left eyes and showed the total. Finally, we set the identification border with density function of the distribution, cumulative frequency function, and ROC curve. With this, we established an objective index to determine autism, normal, false positive, and false negative. This method is used as an objective evaluation indicator to judge non-autistic and autistic people more clearly in early stage.

Development of Objective Index to Determine Autism by Eyeball Movements

It is predicted that Nankai Trough Earthquake will occur in the near future in Japan. Based on this prediction, we develop the disaster simulation by Projection Mapping. Our study aims to promote disaster information visualization, disaster reduction education and voluntary/active individual behavior for disaster reduction. We mapped the video to the diorama of the three-dimensional map model of Aichi in Japan that was made by the 3D printer. It enables to present the hazard map that could only be transferred in a plane so far by three-dimensional way or animation. In addition, Nagoya Municipal Minato Disaster Prevention Center purchased this device on January 20, 2015, and set it as a permanent exhibition. This device is very popular and used by many children. We developed this study and ported a simulation equipment for application for smartphones. We utilized the data of disaster drills carried out in Minamichita and Utsumi area in Aichi, Japan and developed the location identification system and the refuge navigation system.
