An imaging system for a vehicle includes an imaging device having a field of view exteriorly and forward of the vehicle in its direction of travel, and an image processor operable to process the captured images in accordance with an algorithm. The algorithm comprises a sign recognition routine and a character recognition routine. The image processor processes the image data captured by the imaging device to detect signs in the field of view of the imaging device and applies the sign recognition routine to determine a sign type of the detected sign. The image processor is operable to apply the character recognition routine to the image data to determine information on the detected sign. The image processor applies the character recognition routine to the captured images in response to an output of the sign recognition routine being indicative of the detected sign being a sign type of interest.

The nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons constitute a group of chemicals of environmental concern which display a broad spectrum of mutagenic, genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. Some members of the group are the most potent direct-acting bacterial mutagens while others exhibit low levels of potencies which require metabolic activation mixtures. Bacterial mutagenicity is dependent upon reduction of the nitro function. In mammalian cell systems the genetic and genotoxic effects of these nitrated chemicals include the induction of unscheduled DNA synthesis, sister-chromatid exchanges, chromosomal aberrations, gene mutations and cell transformation. The qualitative as well as quantitative expression of these effects is dependent upon the species and tissue of origin as well as culture history of the cell which in turn determine their enzymic capabilities and the conversion of these nitroarenes to ultimate mutagens and genotoxicants. In eukaryotic cells the following bioactivation pathways have been recognized: (a) reduction of the nitro moiety, (b) ring oxidation (the nature of which is influenced by the nitro function) followed by reduction of the nitro group, and (c) ring oxidation without concomitant reduction of the nitro moiety.

Mutagenicity and genotoxicity of nitroarenes: All nitro-containing chemicals were not created equal

A forward-facing vision system for a vehicle includes a forward-facing camera disposed in a windshield electronics module attached at a windshield of the vehicle and viewing through the windshield. A control includes a processor that, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects taillights of leading vehicles during nighttime conditions and, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects lane markers on a road being traveled by the vehicle. The control, responsive to lane marker detection and a determination that the vehicle is drifting out of a traffic lane, may control a steering system of the vehicle to mitigate such drifting, with the steering system manually controllable by a driver of the vehicle irrespective of control by the control. The processor, based at least in part on detection of lane markers via processing of captured image data, determines curvature of the road being traveled by the vehicle.

A vehicle safety system (10) includes a light source (32). A beam-forming assembly (34) is optically coupled to the light source (32). An object detection sensor (16) detects an object and generates an object detection signal. A controller (18) is coupled to the beam-forming assembly (34) and the object detection sensor (16). The controller (18) adjusts illumination output of the vehicle safety system (10) in response to the object detection signal.

Contribution of 1-nitropyrene to direct-acting Ames assay mutagenicities of diesel particulate extracts

Dichloromethane extracts of passenger car diesel exhaust particles were separated into 65 fractions by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and Ames assays (TA98 without activation) were carried out on each fraction. The only prominently mutagenic fractions were ones with elution times approximately coincident with those for 1,3-, 1,6-, and 1,8-dinitropyrenes, 1-nitropyrene, and 3- and 8-nitrofluoranthene. These compounds were quantified in one extract sample by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography coupled with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Among five extract samples studied, 30-40% of the total mutagenicity recovered from the columns could be attributed to these six nitroarenes, 15-20% was recovered in the as yet uncharacterized polar fraction, and the remainder was distributed roughly equally over 63 fractions. About 70% of the mutagenicity applied to the HPLC columns was recovered from the columns. The Ames assay mutagenicities of the unfractionated extracts were shown to be additive in the mutagenicities of the components. 23 references.
