Microplastics have been observed in most environments, and their concentrations are expected to increase over the coming decades given the continued and increased production of synthetic polymer products. The expected increase in microplastic pollution may elevate the risk posed by these synthetic particles to the health of both the aquatic environment and humans. This review seeks to provide a current overview of the occurrence, fate, and impacts of microplastics in aquatic environments worldwide. We first summarize studies recording the occurrence of representative microplastics in marine and freshwater environments, revealing the sources and composition of microplastics. Then, the sorption behavior and relationship between microplastics and pollutants are discussed. The influence of the weathering/aging process and environmental factors on sorption behavior in laboratory tests and real environments is reviewed with particular emphasis on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Finally, the potential toxic effects of microplastics on aquatic biota and human health are discussed. This review aims to advance our understanding of the fate and impacts of microplastics in aquatic environments and to shed light on important questions warranting further investigation.

Los indices de sostenibilidad son herramientas importantes en la gestion de los recursos de agua. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo calcular un indice de sostenibilidad de la cuenca del rio Japaratuba en el Estado de Sergipe, Brasil. La cuenca tiene un area de Japaratuba igual a 1.687,67 km2. El indice de sostenibilidad del Cuenca Hidrografica (WSI) considera la Presion-Estado- Respuesta hidrologica, ambiental, social y politica a traves de la organizacion de ellos la estructura. El WSI calculado para la cuenca en estudio fue de 0,66, lo que indica que la cuenca esta en un nivel intermedio en relacion con la sostenibilidad. Es de destacar que los indicadores que recibieron las puntuaciones mas bajas fueron cuantitativa Hidrologico, relacionado con la baja disponibilidad de agua por habitante y Hidrologico cualitativa, que esta relacionada con la recogida y el tratamiento de las aguas residuales en los municipios de la cuenca.

Applying a sustainability index to the japaratuba river wathershed in sergipe state

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a qualidade das aguas do sistema de abastecimento do municipio de Rosario do Catete, Sergipe, aplicando o Indice de Qualidade de Agua do Conselho Canadense do Ministerio do Meio Ambiente (IQA-CCME).  Foram coletadas amostras nos periodos seco (fev/16) e chuvoso (jul/16) em quatro pontos, sendo um ponto de agua subterrânea, fonte caldas (P1), e tres pontos de agua tratada, sendo estes: poco Cipo (P2), reservatorio (P3) e rede de distribuicao (P4). Os valores maximos permitidos (VMP) utilizados como referencia foram os estabelecidos pela resolucao CONAMA 396/08, para agua subterrânea e portaria de potabilidade do MS 2914/11 para agua tratada. Na aplicacao do IQA-CCME quase todas as amostras foram classificadas como otimas, exceto, a amostra do P1 no mes de julho de 2016 que foi classificada como ruim, com IQA igual a 46. Deste modo, o IQA CCME apresentou-se como uma otima ferramenta para avaliar amostras de agua de diversas fontes, e neste trabalho, o seu calculo indicou que a agua distribuida a populacao do municipio e de excelente qualidade.
