Visualizing the next frontiers in wine yeast research

TL;DR: A total of four future frontiers in wine yeast research are discussed in this paper : the construction of fully synthetic yeast genomes, including minimal genomes, supernumerary pan-genome neochromosomes, synthetic metagenomes, and synthetic yeast communities.

Varietal differentiation of grape juices by protein fingerprinting — an example of unexpected outcomes of benefit to label integrity programs arising from research into alternatives to bentonite fining

TL;DR: Pinder and Meredith as discussed by the authors describe a prime example of an effort that brings together informed judgments of scientific promise of basic research and of industry need for varietal identification, which is one of the important but often overlooked benefits of both public and industry investment in R&D.

Yeast synthetic minimal biosensors for evaluating protein production

TL;DR: Using this synthetic minimal UPR sensor, SM1, it is demonstrated its ability to accurately discriminate between cells expressing different heterologous proteins and at varying production levels, and is thus a novel high-throughput tool for determining expression/engineering strategies for optimal heterologicous protein production.
