This paper proposes a novel integrated synchronous buck converter for the auxiliary power supply system of electric vehicles, which achieves multiple independently regulated outputs with reduced switching components in comparison with the conventional separate buck converters. In order to obtain a better understanding of the proposed converter, operational principle and performance characteristics of a simplified dual-output buck converter are introduced in detail, as an example. The analysis shows that zero-voltage-switching operation and lower conduction losses could be attained. In addition, its dynamic behavior is similar to the conventional buck converter and thus the controller design is simple. Finally, experimental results based on a prototype circuit in which two inductors are integrated into one magnetic core to achieve further reduced cost are demonstrated to verify the advantages.

Integrated Multiple-Output Synchronous Buck Converter for Electric Vehicle Power Supply

Nanogrids are small residential power systems with renewable sources, storage, and domestic loads. It may or may not have connectivity to utility grid. This paper discusses the role of advanced converter technology for Nanogrids in solving acute power shortage problem in Rural India. The paper is divided into two sections. In the first section, the advances in Nanogrid converter technology are discussed. The implementations and advantages of multi-output converters are delineated. In the second section, some proposals are presented to incorporate these new technologies for easy adaption in rural electrification. A prototype is built using off-the-shelf components and commercial loads to prove the usability of the proposed concepts.

Advances in nanogrid technology and its integration into rural electrification in India

A new DC–DC converter capable of working with more than one source for harvesting energy from clean energy sources is proposed. Key features of this proposed converter are single inductor and reduced total number of components. In addition the converter has reduced stresses and power losses. Dual input and output modes, with its operation and steady-state analysis are discussed. Comparative study of the topologies given in literature with a proposed topology for parameters considered like the number of components and voltage gain is presented. Compatibility of the proposed converter is proved with reduced losses using loss distribution analysis of the converter and it is more reliable for energy system in telecom applications, which is validated using reliability analysis, is also highlighted. Finally, to substantiate the working of the non isolated DC–DC converter considered the test results are presented.

Design of Novel Dual Input DC–DC Converter for Energy Harvesting System in IoT Sensor Nodes

The invention discloses a novel two-stage multi-level power inversion system. A front-stage multi-way output DC-DC (Direct Current-Direct Current) convertor and a diode clamping multi-level inverter are cascaded to serve as power topology. Voltage boosting of a power supply and active control on neutral-point voltage of the multi-level inverter can be realized by closed-loop control on voltage of the front-stage DC-DC convertor; and the back-stage clamping multi-level inverter can realize functions of motor driving, grid-connected inversion, isolated grid operation and the like. A method can realize the voltage boosting by the front-stage DC-DC convertor at the same withstand voltage of switching tubes; limitation of a voltage class of a DC power supply can be overcome; a high voltage class load can be adapted; the front-stage DC-DC convertor overcomes an influence of interrupted current input or low-frequency pulsation of the traditional inverter on the DC power supply; the problem of difficult balance of the neutral-point voltage of the clamping multi-level inverter can be overcome by utilizing the active control ability of the front-stage DC-DC convertor on the voltage; and multi-level inverter control of variable neutral-point voltage can be realized to acquire low current.

Novel two-stage multi-level power inversion system

Multi-port DC-DC converter topologies can be used to generate multiple DC outputs from a single DC input source. The voltage gains can be step-up and/or step-down type. This paper proposes a multi-port DC-DC converter topology which generates multiple outputs, which can step-up as well as step-down, from a single DC input. Operating modes and steady state behaviour of the proposed converter has been studied in this paper. Using MATLAB/SIMULINK (R2010a) the proposed converter topology is simulated to generate four outputs (two step-up and two step-down) from a single DC input. The control scheme used here is PIC controller (PIC16F877A) to control multiple outputs. The behaviour of the proposed converter has been verified using a laboratory prototype, which produces a step-up voltage of 30 V and a step-down voltage of 6 V from a single 15 V DC input.

An Integrated Single Input Multi-Output DCDCConverter with Simultaneous Buck andBoost Outputs

Multi-port DC-DC converter topologies can be used to generate multiple DC outputs from a single DC input source — the voltage gains can be step-up and/or step-down type. Compared to dedicated converters, these integrated topologies have higher efficiencies, lesser Bill-of-Material, as well as lesser coordination communication requirements. This paper proposes a multi-port DC-DC converter topology which generates two outputs — step-up as well as step-down, from a single DC input. The converter architecture is realized by replacing the controlled switch of a boost converter with a half bridge network and a low pass filter. Compared to traditional buck converters, the proposed converter has higher reliability, due to its inherent shoot-through protection and has a wider range of step-down outputs. In contrast to two separate buck and boost converters, this proposed topology performs the same function with lesser number of switches. Operating modes and steady state behavior of the proposed converter has been studied in this paper. A suitable control scheme to control both outputs has been described. The behavior of the proposed converter has been verified using a 150 W laboratory prototype, which produces a step-up voltage of 18 V and a step-down voltage of 6 V from a single 12 V input.
