Fatty acids of the genus Bacillus: an example of branched-chain preference.

Biodiesel is gaining acceptance in the market as fuel and lubricant. It is expected that biodiesel industries will rapidly grow worldwide in the coming years and information on biodiesel feedstock, production, and characteristics will be crucial than ever especially for those using vegetable oils as feedstock as these are currently the major sources for making biodiesel. In the present paper, a comprehensive review is reported on feedstock, production technologies, and characteristics of biodiesel. More specifically, selected available vegetable oils are explored as feedstock for biodiesel production. Production technologies including latest catalyst developments are discussed. Finally, biodiesel characteristics and parameters influencing the corresponding properties are revealed. Since this paper covers a wide range in biodiesel area, it serves as a general public education medium as well as a research reference for biodiesel production from vegetable oils.

Structure and occurrence of unusual fatty acids in minor seed oils

The fatty acid, sterol and hydrocarbon compositions of oil produced by a new strain of Rhodotorula glutinis isolated from soil and grown on molasses, were determined. The major constituent fatty acids were: palmitic (37%) oleic (47%) and linoleic (8%). The major sterols were campesterol (42%) and stigmasterol (27%) and the major hydrocarbons were n-C23 (37%), iso-C29 (30%) and n-C21 (19%). Minor constituents in each class of lipids were also detected and estimated. The oil produced was 54% on a dry weight basis. The fatty acid composition was found to be close to that of palm oil.

The fatty acid composition of the seed oils of the species, Hydnocarpus kurzii, H. wightiana and H. odorata were determined by gas-liquid chromatographic (g.l.c.) analysis. The percentages of individual fatty acids were found to be: hydnocarpic 23.0, 33.9, -; chaulmoogric 29.6, 35.0, -; gorlic 25.1, 12.8, -; lower cyclic homologues 0.3, 4.6, -; myristic 0.6, 0.8, 0.4; palmitic 8.4, 5.6, 11.8; stearic -, 0.6, 4.7; palmitoleic 6.0, 1.3, 0.5; oleic 5.4, 3.6, 21.8; linoleic 1.6, 1.8, 29.3; linolenic -, -, 31.2; respectively.
