The web as a model technology in freshman design

TL;DR: In this article, the challenge of teaching design to freshmen is to find projects and technologies that suit their level of proficiency while allowing them to experience the design process and prepare for upper level courses.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

Perceptual collapse: The fusion of spatially distinct tactile cues into a single percept

TL;DR: This work investigates how haptic percepts are combined across two fingertips, finding that subjects exhibited a strong bias toward reporting a single objective bump in the virtual world, evidence for a kinesthetic grouping phenomenon.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

Real time simulation of stiff dynamic systems via distributed memory parallel processors

TL;DR: A class of dynamic systems consisting of constrained planar rigid bodies is considered, which poses two significant challenges to the development of advanced kinesthetic interfaces: real-time simulation requires extremely high update rates to be stable and present the operator with a realistic "feel".
Journal ArticleDOI

Effusive flow conductance of shielded circular channels

TL;DR: In this paper, a circular shield coaxial with the conductance channel and spaced a small distance from the channel entrance is used to establish a well defined gas density gradient inside the effusion cell.
