This document provides updates to IEEE Std 802.16's MIB for the MAC, PHY and asso- ciated management procedures in order to accommodate recent extensions to the standard.

ns-3 is a recently released next generation simulator intended as a replacement of the popular ns-2. It enables a highly rich set of features and is expected to become the first choice of the scientific community soon. ns-3 is in its evolution phase and work at different fronts is still ongoing. With the recent emergence of broadband wireless networks, simulation support for such networks, especially IEEE 802.16 WiMAX, is becoming a necessity. In this paper, we propose and discuss in detail the design and implementation of an IEEE 802.16 WiMAX module for ns-3, with the Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) mode and the WirelessMAN-OFDM PHY layer. Our module implements fundamental functions of the convergence sublayer (CS) and the MAC common-part sublayer (CPS), including QoS scheduling services, bandwidth request/grant mechanism, and a simple uplink scheduler. The aim is to provide a standard-compliant and well-designed implementation of the standard.

An IEEE 802.16 WiMAX module for the NS-3 simulator

The enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides quality-of-service (QoS) support through service differentiation by using different medium-access-control (MAC) parameters for different stations. The configuration of these parameters, however, is still an open research challenge, as the standard provides only a set of fixed recommended values that do not take into account the current wireless local area network (WLAN) conditions and, therefore, lead to suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for EDCA that, given the throughput and delay requirements of the stations that are present in the WLAN, computes the optimal configuration of the EDCA parameters. We first present a throughput and delay analysis that provides the mathematical foundation upon which our algorithm is based. This analysis is validated through simulations of different traffic sources (both data and real time) and EDCA configurations. We then propose a mechanism to derive the optimal configuration of the EDCA parameters, given a set of performance criteria for throughput and delay. We assess the effectiveness of the configuration provided by our algorithm by comparing it against 1) the recommended values by the standard, 2) the results from an exhaustive search over the parameter space, and 3) previous configuration proposals, which are both standard and nonstandard compliant. Results show that our configuration outperforms all other approaches.

Tuning of 802.11e network parameters

IEEE 802.16 standard (also known as WiMAX) defines the wireless broadband network technology which aims to solve the so called last mile problem via providing high bandwidth Internet even to the rural areas for which the cable deployment is very costly. The standard mainly focuses on the MAC and PHY layer issues, supporting two transmission modes: PMP (Point-to-Multipoint) and mesh modes. Mesh mode is an optional mode developed as an extension to PMP mode and it has the advantage of having an improving performance as more subscribers are added to the system using multi-hop routes. In 802.16 MAC protocol, mesh mode slot allocation and reservation mechanisms are left open which makes this topic a hot research area. Hence, the focus of this survey will mostly be on the mesh mode, and the proposed scheduling algorithms and performance evaluation methods.

A Survey on Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode

In order to support real-time and bandwidth demanding applications the IEEE 802.16 standard is expected to provide quality of service (QoS). Although the standard defines a QoS signaling framework and four service levels, scheduling mechanisms for this network are unspecified. In this paper, we propose a scheduling discipline for uplink traffic. Simulation results show that our scheme is capable to provide QoS. Moreover it shares fairly the resources among connections of the same service type.

Uplink Scheduling with Quality of Service in IEEE 802.16 Networks

This paper presents the design and validation of an WiMAX module based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. The module, which was implemented, includes mechanisms for bandwidth request and allocation, as well as for QoS provision. Moreover, the implementation is standard-compliant.

WiMAX Module for the ns-2 Simulator

The IEEE 802.11e standard is intended to support the applications with QoS requirements. Such support is achieved by using differentiated categories for medium access. When the number of active stations is high, collision rate increases, affecting goodput and delay. In this paper, the effectiveness of two mechanisms for measurement-based admission control in 802.11e networks are evaluated.
