The largest convective clouds are mesoscale convective systems, which account for a large portion of Earth's cloud cover and precipitation, and the patterns of wind and weather associated with mesoscale convective systems are important local phenomena that often must be forecast on short timescales. They often produce floods. Mesoscale convective systems are generally much larger than the individual cumulonimbus and lines of cumulonimbus discussed in Chapter 8 . They develop circulations on the mesoscale, which are larger in scale than the updrafts and downdrafts of individual cumulonimbus clouds. The mesoscale circulations produce large regions of stratiform (nimbostratus) precipitation of the type discussed in Chapter 6 . Often the stratiform precipitation regions trail a squall line consisting of convective cells, and a mesoscale convective vortex tends to form in the stratiform region. The heating profile in the stratiform region is positive at upper levels and negative at lower levels due to evaporation and melting of the precipitation particles. The dynamics of mesoscale circulations involve a joint adjustment to the wind shear and thermodynamic stratification of the large scale environment. Gravity-wave dynamics also contribute to the maintenance of mesoscale convective systems. This chapter reviews both the observed structure of mesoscale systems and their unique dynamics.

Mesoscale convective systems

This paper discusses common modes of mesoscale convective organization. Using 2-km national composite reflectivity data, the authors investigated linear mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that occurred in the central United States during May 1996 and May 1997. Based upon the radar-observed characteristics of 88 linear MCSs, the authors propose a new taxonomy comprising convective lines with trailing (TS), leading (LS), and parallel (PS) stratiform precipitation. While the TS archetype was found to be the dominant mode of linear MCS organization, the LS and PS archetypes composed nearly 40% of the studied population. In this paper, the authors document the characteristics of each linear MCS class and use operational surface and upper air data to describe their different environments. In particular, wind profiler data reveal that the stratiform precipitation arrangement associated with each class was roughly consistent with the advection of hydrometeors implied by the mean middle- and upper-tropospheric storm-relative winds, which were significantly different among the three MCS modes. Case study examples are presented for both the LS and PS classes, which have received relatively little attention to this point. As well, the authors give a general overview of the synoptic-scale meteorology accompanying linear MCSs in this study, which was generally similar to that observed by previous investigators.

Organizational Modes of Midlatitude Mesoscale Convective Systems

Herein preliminary findings are reported from a radar-based climatology of warm season precipitation ‘‘episodes.’’ Episodes are defined as time‐space clusters of heavy precipitation that often result from sequences of organized convection such as squall lines, mesoscale convective systems, and mesoscale convective complexes. Episodes exhibit coherent rainfall patterns, characteristic of propagating events, under a broad range of atmospheric conditions. Such rainfall patterns are most frequent under ‘‘weakly forced’’ conditions in midsummer. The longevity of episodes, up to 60 h, suggests an intrinsic predictability of warm season rainfall that significantly exceeds the lifetime of individual convective systems. Episodes are initiated primarily in response to diurnal and semidiurnal forcings. Diurnal forcing is dominant near the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, whereas semidiurnal forcing is dominant between these cordilleras. A most common longitude of origin is at or near the east slope of the Continental Divide (1058W). These observations are consistent with a condition of continual thermal forcing, widespread hydrodynamic instability, and the existence of other processes that routinely excite, maintain, and regenerate organized convection. The propagation speed of major episodes is often in excess of rates that are easily attributable either to the phase speeds of large-scale forcing or to advection from low- to midlevel ‘‘steering’’ winds. It is speculated that wavelike mechanisms, in the free troposphere and/or the planetary boundary layer, may contribute to the rates of motion observed. Once understood, the representation of such mechanisms in forecast models offers the opportunity for improved predictions of warm season rainfall.

Inferences of predictability associated with warm season precipitation episodes

Five characteristic, low-level, large-scale dynamical patterns associated with tropical cyclogenesis in the western North Pacific basin are examined along with their capacity to generate the type of mesoscale convective systems that precede genesis. An 8-yr analysis set for the region is used to identify, and create composites for, the five characteristic patterns of monsoon shear line, monsoon confluence region, monsoon gyre, easterly waves, and Rossby energy dispersion. This brings out the common processes that contribute to tropical cyclogenesis within that pattern, which are described in detail. A 3-yr set of satellite data is then used to analyze the mesoscale convective system activity for all cases of genesis in that period and to stratify based on the above large-scale patterns. Large-Scale Patterns Associated with Tropical Cyclogenesis in the Western Pacific

A convectively generated mesoscale vortex that was instrumental in initiating and organizing five successive mesoscale convective systems over a period of three days is documented. Two of these convective systems were especially intense and resulted in widespread heavy rain with localized flooding. Based upon radar and satellite data, the detectable size of the vortex became much larger following the strong convective developments, nearly tripling its initial diameter over its three-day life cycle. During nighttime, when convection typically intensified within the vortex, movement of the system tended to slow. Following dissipation of the convection in the morning, the daytime movement accelerated. Cross sections of potential vorticity taken through the vortex center clearly show a maximum at midlevels and a well-defined minimum directly above. Warm Core Vortex Amplification over Land

The hypothesis that clouds and precipitation enhance cold air damming is examined. A case example of cloud/precipitation-induced enhancement of damming is presented and a conceptual model is proposed. It is found that the subcloud-layer diabatic effects associated with areas of precipitation produce mesoscale changes in pressure, wind, and static stability. These changes tend to maintain or strengthen damming in two fundamental ways: 1) Cloud cover maintains damming by preventing or reducing the radiative destabilization in the upslope layer. Without cloud cover, the lapse rate is more likely to increase so that upslope adiabatic cooling, and therefore the potential for damming, is decreased. 2) Subcloud-layer diabatic cooling from evaporation and reduced radiation produces a hydrostatic pressure rise in the precipitation zone.
