The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 10(34)cm(-2)s(-1) (10(27)cm(-2)s(-1)). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4 pi solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudo-rapidity coverage to high values (vertical bar eta vertical bar <= 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

This paper describes the CMS trigger system and its performance during Run 1 of the LHC. The trigger system consists of two levels designed to select events of potential physics interest from a GHz (MHz) interaction rate of proton-proton (heavy ion) collisions. The first level of the trigger is implemented in hardware, and selects events containing detector signals consistent with an electron, photon, muon, tau lepton, jet, or missing transverse energy. A programmable menu of up to 128 object-based algorithms is used to select events for subsequent processing. The trigger thresholds are adjusted to the LHC instantaneous luminosity during data taking in order to restrict the output rate to 100 kHz, the upper limit imposed by the CMS readout electronics. The second level, implemented in software, further refines the purity of the output stream, selecting an average rate of 400 Hz for offline event storage. The objectives, strategy and performance of the trigger system during the LHC Run 1 are described.

The CMS trigger system

New physics has traditionally been expected in the high-pT region at high-energy collider experiments. If new particles are light and weakly coupled, however, this focus may be completely misguided: light particles are typically highly concentrated within a few mrad of the beam line, allowing sensitive searches with small detectors, and even extremely weakly coupled particles may be produced in large numbers there. We propose a new experiment, forward search experiment, or FASER, which would be placed downstream of the ATLAS or CMS interaction point (IP) in the very forward region and operated concurrently there. Two representative on-axis locations are studied: a far location, 400 m from the IP and just off the beam tunnel, and a near location, just 150 m from the IP and right behind the TAN neutral particle absorber. For each location, we examine leading neutrino- and beam-induced backgrounds. As a concrete example of light, weakly coupled particles, we consider dark photons produced through light meson decay and proton bremsstrahlung. We find that even a relatively small and inexpensive cylindrical detector, with a radius of ∼10  cm and length of 5–10  m, depending on the location, can discover dark photons in a large and unprobed region of parameter space with dark photon mass mA′∼10–500  MeV and kinetic mixing parameter e∼10-6-10-3. FASER will clearly also be sensitive to many other forms of new physics. We conclude with a discussion of topics for further study that will be essential for understanding FASER’s feasibility, optimizing its design, and realizing its discovery potential.

ForwArd Search ExpeRiment at the LHC

TOTEM has measured the differential cross-section for elastic proton-proton scattering at the LHC energy of analysing data from a short run with dedicated large-β* optics. A single exponential fit with a slope B=(20.1±0.2stat±0.3syst) GeV−2 describes the range of the four-momentum transfer squared |t| from 0.02 to 0.33 GeV2. After the extrapolation to |t|=0, a total elastic scattering cross-section of (24.8±0.2stat±1.2syst) mb was obtained. Applying the optical theorem and using the luminosity measurement from CMS, a total proton-proton cross-section of (98.3±0.2stat±2.8syst) mb was deduced which is in good agreement with the expectation from the overall fit of previously measured data over a large range of center-of-mass energies. From the total and elastic pp cross-section measurements, an inelastic pp cross-section of was inferred.

First measurement of the total proton-proton cross-section at the LHC energy of √s = 7 TeV

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) [1] at CERN is the most powerful particle collider ever built. The accelerator has a circumference of 27\(\mathrm {\,km}\) and it is installed in a dedicated tunnel placed 100\(\mathrm {\,m}\) underground in the Swiss-France area near Geneva (Switzerland). LHC is designed to accelerate counter-propagating proton beams up to an energy of 7\(\mathrm {\,TeV}\) and collide them at the nominal centre-of-mass energy of 14\(\mathrm {\,TeV}\). Before injection in the LHC ring, the beams are pre-accelerated by several steps as shown in Fig. 2.1.

The LHCb Detector at the LHC

The TOTEM Experiment will measure the total pp cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and study elastic and diffractive scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, will be installed on each side in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 ≤ |η| ≤ 6.5, and Roman Pot stations will be placed at distances of ±147 m and ±220 m from IP5. Being an independent experiment but technically integrated into CMS, TOTEM will first operate in standalone mode to pursue its own physics programme and at a later stage together with CMS for a common physics programme. This article gives a description of the TOTEM apparatus and its performance.

Abstract Background Giant cell arteritis is an inflammatory disease of the large- and medium-sized vessels. It is the most common primary vasculitis, with lifetime incidences of 0.5% and 1% in men and women, respectively. Its diagnosis is based upon clinical criteria, which may include temporal artery biopsy. Expected positivity rates of temporal artery biopsies and patient selection remain controversial topics in the literature. Methods A cross-sectional retrospective study of 127 patients referred for temporal artery biopsy with a diagnosis of suspected giant cell arteritis between January 2014 and December 2018 was performed. The primary outcome was the positivity rate. The relationships between positivity rates, symptoms, clinical suspicion, biopsy delay, biopsy length and corticosteroid treatment were also studied. Results A positivity rate of 23.7% (16.6–32.6%) was shown, along with a significant association between jaw claudication and specimen positivity (odds ratio 8.1, p &lt; 0.05). Moreover, there were significant associations between a high initial clinical suspicion of disease and specimen positivity ( p &lt; 0.05), as well as a high initial clinical suspicion of disease and pursuit of corticosteroid treatment following biopsy results, regardless of positivity ( p &lt; 0.05). The duration of corticosteroid treatment prior to biopsy was not associated with a change in positivity rate. Conclusions The positivity rate of temporal artery biopsy was 23.7%. Treatment of patients with negative temporal artery biopsy was associated with maintenance of corticosteroid treatment when the initial clinical suspicion of arteritis was high. Therefore, temporal artery biopsy may not be necessary for patients with a high initial clinical suspicion of giant cell arteritis. Graphical Abstract
