Normalized Undrained Shear Strength of Clay Shales

Cet article presente des resultats se rapportant a la teneur en carbonate de silts et d'argiles naturels en fonction de la profondeur, de l'emplacement geographique et de l'origine geologique. On etudie aussi l'influence de cette teneur en carbonate sur le comportement geotechnique. L'effet sur la pression de preconsolidation apparente est illustre en detail pour l'un des sites etudies. La repartition des carbonates a l'interieur des varves d'un depot glacio-lacustre est egalement presentee pour demontrer la variabilite potentielle de la cimentation naturelle des sols. Les donnees en provenance de quinze sites etayent les relations proposees entre teneur en carbonate et pression de preconsolidation apparente.

Carbonates and cementation of glacially derived cohesive soils in New York State and southern Ontario

A series of isotropically consolidated undrained triaxial tests has been performed on an artificially cemented marine clay using lime as an additive. This procedure is helpful to simulate the behavior of naturally cemented marine clays often found in many coastal and offshore areas. By comparing the undrained shear behavior of artificially cemented samples with the available data on the naturally cemented marine clays, the effect of cementation on the mechanical properties of clays is evaluated. The results show that cemented soils display smaller strain at failure, higher strength, a gradual reduction in shearing resistance with increase in consolidation pressure, and a nonlinear failure envelope in effective stresses. Within the degree of cementation considered in this study, the cementation is shown to have little affect on the generation of pore pressure.
