Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable-energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low cost remains a great challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material consisting of Co₃O₄ nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although Co₃O₄ or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen doping of graphene. The Co₃O₄/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active for OER, making it a high-performance non-precious metal-based bi-catalyst for both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic chemical coupling effects between Co₃O₄ and graphene.

Electrochemical systems, such as fuel cell and water splitting devices, represent some of the most efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for energy conversion and storage. Electrocatalysts play key roles in the chemical processes but often limit the performance of the entire systems due to insufficient activity, lifetime, or high cost. It has been a long-standing challenge to develop efficient and durable electrocatalysts at low cost. In this Perspective, we present our recent efforts in developing strongly coupled inorganic/nanocarbon hybrid materials to improve the electrocatalytic activities and stability of inorganic metal oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, and metal–nitrogen complexes. Strongly coupled inorganic/nanocarbon hybrid materials for advanced electrocatalysis.

The miniaturization of power sources aimed at integration into micro- and nano-electronic devices is a big challenge. To ensure the future development of fully autonomous on-board systems, electrodes based on self-supported 3D nanostructured metal oxides have become increasingly important, and their impact is particularly significant when considering the miniaturization of energy storage systems. This review describes recent advances in the development of self-supported 3D nanostructured metal oxides as electrodes for innovative power sources, particularly Li-ion batteries and electrochemical supercapacitors. Current strategies for the design and morphology control of self-supported electrodes fabricated using template, lithography, anodization and self-organized solution techniques are outlined along with different efforts to improve the storage capacity, rate capability, and cyclability.

Three‐Dimensional Self‐Supported Metal Oxides for Advanced Energy Storage

Probing the Optical Property and Electronic Structure of TiO2 Nanomaterials for Renewable Energy Applications

The O2electrode in Li–O2cells was shown to exhibit gravimetric energy densities (considering the total weight of oxygen electrode in the discharged state) four times that of LiCoO2 with comparable gravimetric power. The discharge rate capability of Au-catalyzed Vulcan carbon and pure Vulcan carbon (VC) as the O2electrode was studied in the range of 100 to 2000 mA gcarbon−1. The discharge voltage and capacity of the Li−O2 cells were shown to decrease with increasing rates. Unlike propylene carbonate based electrolytes, the rate capability of Li−O2 cells tested with 1,2-dimethoxyethane was found not to be limited by oxygen transport in the electrolyte. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) showed lithium peroxide as the discharge product and no evidence of Li2CO3 and LiOH was found. It is hypothesized that higher discharge voltages of cells with Au/C than VC at low rates could have originated from higher oxygen reduction activity of Au/C. At high rates, higher discharge voltages with Au/C than VC could be attributed to faster lithium transport in nonstoichiometric and defective lithium peroxide formed upon discharge, which is supported by XRD and X-ray absorption near edge structure O and Li K edge data.

The discharge rate capability of rechargeable Li–O2 batteries

We report an X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigation of several TiO2nanotube arrays, including the as-prepared nanotube arrays from electrochemical anodic oxidation of Ti foil (as-prepared ATNTA), as-prepared nanotube arrays after annealing at 580 °C (annealed ATNTA) and annealed ATNTA after electrochemical intercalation with Li (Li-intercalated ATNTA). XANES at the O K-edge and Ti L3,2 and K edges shows distinctly different spectral features for the as-prepared and the annealed ATNTA, characteristic of amorphous and anatase structures, respectively. Intercalation of Li into annealed ATNTA induces a surprising, yet spectroscopically unmistakable, anatase to rutile transition. XANES at the Li K-edge clearly shows ionic features of Li in ATNTA. The charge relocation from Ti 3d to O 2p at the conduction band in TiO2 was also observed when Li ions were intercalated into annealed ATNTA albeit no noticeable reduction of Ti4+ to Ti 3+ was observed. The O K-edge shows a distinctly enhanced feature in the multiple scattering regime, indicating a close to linear O–Li–O arrangement in Li-intercalated ATNTA. These results show bonding changes between Ti and O resulting from the interaction of Li ions in the TiO2 lattices. Such bonding variation has also been supported by X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), which suggests Li+-defect interactions. The implications of these results are discussed.
