TL;DR: It is concluded that improved STD treatment reduced HIV incidence by about 40% in this rural population of Tanzania, the first randomised trial to demonstrate an impact of a preventive intervention on HIV incidence in a general population.

TL;DR: Targetted health education concerning risk reduction for HIV infection and other STDs should be a high priority in this population and improved case management of STDs in health centres and dispensaries may have a substantial impact on the incidence of these infections.
