Organochlorine (OC) pesticides are synthetic pesticides widely used all over the world They belong to the group of chlorinated hydrocarbon derivatives, which have vast application in the chemical industry and in agriculture These compounds are known for their high toxicity, slow degradation and bioaccumulation Even though many of the compounds which belong to OC were banned in developed countries, the use of these agents has been rising This concerns particularly abuse of these chemicals which is in practice across the continents Though pesticides have been developed with the concept of target organism toxicity, often non-target species are affected badly by their application The purpose of this review is to list the major classes of pesticides, to understand organochlorine pesticides based on their activity and persistence, and also to understand their biochemical toxicity

Review Article. Organochlorine pesticides, their toxic effects on living organisms and their fate in the environment

There are number of water purification techniques but the adsorption is one of the most simplest, effective and economical method for wastewater purification. In this article a large number of solid adsorbents such as Natural adsorbents, Agricultural Wastes, Industrial wastes, Biomass, Nanoadsorbents: Carbon based nanomaterials, Nobel metal based nanomaterials, Metal oxide based nanomaterials, Spinel ferrite based nanomaterials, Nanocomposites, Dendritic polymers; Geopolymer cement have been discussed for the removal of different pollutants from waste water. Removal of Fluoride, Phosphate, Nitrate and Radionuclides from wastewater has also been reviewed in this article. Adsorption isotherm models, kinetic models, thermodynamic parameters and adsorption mechanism have also been discussed. The present article lists different type of adsorbents and reviews state-of-the-art of the removal of different pollutants from water. The efforts have been made to discuss the sources of contamination and toxicities of pollutants. Adsorption mechanisms responsible for pollutants removal by different adsorbents have been reviewed. Attempts have also been made to point out the advantages and drawbacks of adsorbents and the future research needs in the area of water purification by adsorbents.

Water purification by using Adsorbents: A Review

The soil sorption coefficient Kd and the soil organic carbon sorption coefficient KOC of pesticides are basic parameters used by environmental scientists and regulatory agencies worldwide in describing the environmental fate and behavior of pesticides. They are a measure of the strength of sorption of pesticides to soils and other geosorbent surfaces at the water/solid interface, and are thus directly related to both environmental mobility and persistence. KOC is regarded as a 'universal' parameter related to the hydrophobicity of the pesticide molecule, which applies to a given pesticide in all soils. This assumption is known to be inexact, but it is used in this way in modeling and estimating risk for pesticide leaching and runoff. In this report we examine the theory, uses, measurement or estimation, limitations and reliability of these parameters and provide some 'rules of thumb' for the use of these parameters in describing the behavior and fate of pesticides in the environment, especially in analysis by modeling.

Prioritizing research for trace pollutants and emerging contaminants in the freshwater environment.

A principal goal of pesticide science is to be able to predict the environmental impact of a pesticide before it is released into the environment. To save expense and time, we would like to be able to make such a prediction for each pesticide with as few laboratory experiments on the pesticide as possible, and even fewer field experiments. Environmental processes, however, are enormously complex and sometimes (apparently) random. The sites of most interest—agricultural fields, forests, lakes, streams, etc.—are subtle living ecosystems which are incompletely understood and subject to great variability in space and time. The very diversity and intricacy which are indicators of the health of such ecosystems makes even the definition of what constitutes a significant impact on such systems a difficult task.
