Clock distribution networks synchronize the flow of data signals among synchronous data paths. The design of these networks can dramatically affect system-wide performance and reliability. A theoretical background of clock skew is provided in order to better understand how clock distribution networks interact with data paths. Minimum and maximum timing constraints are developed from the relative timing between the localized clock skew and the data paths. These constraint relationships are reviewed, and compensating design techniques are discussed. The field of clock distribution network design and analysis can be grouped into a number of subtopics: 1) circuit and layout techniques for structured custom digital integrated circuits; 2) the automated layout and synthesis of clock distribution networks with application to automated placement and routing of gate arrays, standard cells and larger block-oriented circuits; 3) the analysis and modeling of the timing characteristics of clock distribution networks; and 4) the scheduling of the optimal timing characteristics of clock distribution networks based on architectural and functional performance requirements. Each of these areas is described the clock distribution networks of specific industrial circuits are surveyed and future trends are discussed.

Performance optimization of VLSI interconnect layout

The deferred-merge embedding (DME) algorithm, which embeds any given connection topology to create a clock tree with zero skew while minimizing total wirelength, is presented. The algorithm always yields exact zero skew trees with respect to the appropriate delay model. Experimental results show an 8% to 15% wire length reduction over some previous constructions. The DME algorithm may be applied to either the Elmore or linear delay model, and yields optimal total wirelength for linear delay. DME is a very fast algorithm, running in time linear in the number of synchronizing elements. A unified BB+DME algorithm, which constructs a clock tree topology using a top-down balanced bipartition (BB) approach and then applies DME to that topology, is also presented. The experimental results indicate that both the topology generation and embedding components of the methodology are necessary for effective clock tree construction. >

Zero skew clock routing with minimum wirelength

An exact zero skew clock routing algorithm using the Elmore delay model is presented. Recursively in a bottom-up fashion, two zero-skewed subtrees are merged into a new tree with zero skew. The algorithm can be applied to single-staged clock trees, multi-staged clock trees, and multi-chip system clock trees. It is ideal for hierarchical methods of constructing large systems. All subsystems can be constructed in parallel and independently, and then interconnected with exact zero skew. Experimental results are presented. >

Wave-pipelining is a method of high-performance circuit design which implements pipelining in logic without the use of intermediate latches or registers. The combination of high-performance integrated circuit (IC) technologies, pipelined architectures, and sophisticated computer-aided design (CAD) tools has converted wave-pipelining from a theoretical oddity into a realistic, although challenging, VLSI design method. This paper presents a tutorial of the principles of wave-pipelining and a survey of wave-pipelined VLSI chips and CAD tools for the synthesis and analysis of wave-pipelined circuits.

Wave-pipelining: a tutorial and research survey

Improving the performance of a synchronous digital system by adjusting the path delays of the clock signal from the central clock source to individual flip-flops is investigated. Using a model to detect clocking hazards, two linear programs are investigated: (1) minimizing the clock period, while avoiding clock hazards, and (2) for a given period, maximizing the minimum safety margin against clock hazard. These programs are solved for a simple example, and circuit simulation is used to contrast the operation of a resulting circuit with the conventionally clocked version. The method is extended to account for clock skew caused by relative variations in the drive capabilities of N-channel versus P-channel transistors in CMOS. >
