General considerations about physical reasons for the existence of surface acoustic waves and, in particular, shear surface acoustic waves in solids are presented. The results of calculations for various types of shear surface acoustic waves are described, and corresponding physical explanations are given.

Magnetoacoustic surface waves in magnetic crystals near spin-reorientation phase transitions

This is a review of research results on conditions under which spatially restricted low-temperature antiferromagnets and their composites can be considered as a special class of acoustic magnetic metamaterials (magnetoacoustic metamaterials). In these, the dynamic magnetoacoustic interaction produces a number of effects that are acoustic analogs of polariton effects and which are currently intensively studied in nonmagnetic acoustic metamaterials. It is shown that the elastostatic approach to the analysis of the magnetoelastic dynamics of spatially restricted compensated magnetics is an effective tool in the search for new types of resonance acoustic anomalies, part of which are typical of the magnetostatic spin wave physics (elastostatic bulk and surface spin waves, nonuniform spin–spin resonances with their participation, etc.).

Spin wave acoustics of antiferromagnetic structures as magnetoacoustic metamaterials

The effect of a perfectly conducting infinitely thin metal coating on the properties of magnetoelastic surface waves is discussed. Dispersion relations are derived for magnetoelastic Love waves propagating in the following structures: (i) metal‐coated nonmagnetic‐layered magnetic substrate, (ii) nonmagnetic‐layered metal‐coated magnetic substrate, (iii) metal‐coated thin magnetic plate, and (iv) metal‐coated magnetic‐layered nonmagnetic substrate.

Magnetoelastic Love‐Wave Propagation in Metal‐Coated Layered Substrates

Vibrations localized near surfaces and interfaces in nontraditional crystals

A magnetoelastic surface wave is shown to exist in an elastically isotropic ferrite, e.g. y.i.g. The wave exhibits a nonreciprocal behaviour, and is found to have no counterpart in a purely elastic medium.
