Luminescence and scintillation characteristics of four selected material systems, namely CsI:Tl(Na), CeF 3 , PbWO 4 and Ce-doped aluminium perovskites XAIO 3 :Ce (X=Y, Lu, Y-Lu) are reviewed. The progress in their physical understanding and related optimisation of their characteristics and technology are demonstrated. The important role of various defect states in the scintillator performance of these materials is stressed, which has led to the need for a deeper study of the processes of energy transfer and storage to achieve their intrinsic limits and full exploitation in scintillation detectors.

Wide Band Gap Scintillation Materials: Progress in the Technology and Material Understanding

Yttrium aluminium perovskite activated by cerium (formula YAlO 3 :Ce, abbreviated YAP:Ce) is systematically investigated in view of its use as efficient scintillator for various applications. The basic physical and chemical properties of YAP:Ce monocrystals are summarized in this paper. The luminescence, scintillation and absorption characteristics, the γ-ray detection capability, energy resolution in the range of 30–600 keV, light yield and radiation hardness are presented and compared with existing literature.

Scintillation properties of YAP:Ce

This report summarizes the results of a study on the properties of five large and five small size lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) crystals. Data are presented on the longitudinal optical transmittance and light attenuation length, light yield and response uniformity, emission spectra and decay time. The radiation resistance of large crystals and possible curing with optical bleaching are discussed. The result of an in depth materials study, including trace impurities analysis, are also presented. The general conclusion from this investigation is that further research and development is needed to develop fast, radiation-hard PbWO 4 crystals for the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC.

A study on the properties of lead tungstate crystals

The decay kinetics of PbWO4 luminescence and scintillation is investigated in a broad time scale 10−9 to 10−3 mainly at room temperature using a selected set of PbWO4 crystals The light sum released in different time gates is estimated showing rather high content of slow recombination processes related mainly to the green PbWO4 emission component Correlations are found among the absolute green emission intensity, crystal light yield, and the amplitude of very slow processes in the PbWO4 scintillation decay

Slow components in the photoluminescence and scintillation decays of PbWO4 single crystals

This work summarizes progress in the development of scintillation detectors for γ-ray spectrometry achieved in the last 50 years. The limitations of energy resolution are discussed with a special emphasis on non-proportional response of scintillators to γ-rays and electrons, which is of crucial importance to an intrinsic resolution of the crystals.
