Array processing involves manipulation of signals induced on various antenna elements. Its capabilities of steering nulls to reduce cochannel interferences and pointing independent beams toward various mobiles, as well as its ability to provide estimates of directions of radiating sources, make it attractive to a mobile communications system designer. Array processing is expected to play an important role in fulfilling the increased demands of various mobile communications services. Part I of this paper showed how an array could be utilized in different configurations to improve the performance of mobile communications systems, with references to various studies where feasibility of apt array system for mobile communications is considered. This paper provides a comprehensive and detailed treatment of different beam-forming schemes, adaptive algorithms to adjust the required weighting on antennas, direction-of-arrival estimation methods-including their performance comparison-and effects of errors on the performance of an array system, as well as schemes to alleviate them. This paper brings together almost all aspects of array signal processing.

Application of antenna arrays to mobile communications. II. Beam-forming and direction-of-arrival considerations

A number of time-varying step-size algorithms have been proposed to enhance the performance of the conventional LMS algorithm. Experimentation with these algorithms indicates that their performance is highly sensitive to the noise disturbance. This paper presents a robust variable step-size LMS-type algorithm providing fast convergence at early stages of adaptation while ensuring small final misadjustment. The performance of the algorithm is not affected by existing uncorrelated noise disturbances. An approximate analysis of convergence and steady-state performance for zero-mean stationary Gaussian inputs and for nonstationary optimal weight vector is provided. Simulation results comparing the proposed algorithm to current variable step-size algorithms clearly indicate its superior performance for cases of stationary environments. For nonstationary environments, our algorithm performs as well as other variable step-size algorithms in providing performance equivalent to that of the regular LMS algorithm.

A robust variable step size LMS-type algorithm: analysis and simulations

A unified view of algorithms for adaptive transversal FIR filtering and system identification has been presented. Wiener filtering and stochastic approximation are the origins from which all the algorithms have been derived, via a suitable choice of iterative optimization schemes and appropriate design parameters. Following this philosophy, the LMS algorithm and its offspring have been presented and interpreted as stochastic approximations of iterative deterministic steepest descent optimization schemes. On the other hand, the RLS and the quasi-RLS algorithms, like the quasi-Newton, the FNTN, and the affine projection algorithm, have been derived as stochastic approximations of iterative deterministic Newton and quasi-Newton methods. Fast implementations of these methods have been discussed. Block-adaptive, and block-exact adaptive filtering have also been considered. The performance of the adaptive algorithms has been demonstrated by computer simulations.

Low-complexity adaptive step size constrained constant modulus SG algorithms for adaptive beamforming

A multistep size frequency-domain adaptive filter capable of tracking both stationary and nonstationary signals is proposed. This algorithm makes use of the simple structure of the least mean square error algorithm to update the filter coefficients and process the signal. It then proceeds further by incorporating a set of three step sizes and a knowledge-based strategy to select the best set of filter coefficients and the optimum step size iteratively. The main advantage of the MSS algorithm over the conventional LMS algorithm is that better performance is achieved without the knowledge of the input signal characteristics, such as signal power, degree of nonstationarity, signal-to-noise ratio, and stability bounds. Experimentally, the MSS algorithm is tested under various signal environments. The transient characteristics of the step sizes are found to be in agreement with previous theoretical studies of nonstationary characteristics of the LMS algorithm. In order to reduce the complexity, the conventional frequency-domain block LMS structure is also modified so that the MSS algorithm can be embedded more efficiently by exploiting the block structure. >
