We have designed, fabricated and operated a scalable system for applying independently programmable time-independent, and limited time-dependent flux biases to control superconducting devices in an integrated circuit. Here we report on the operation of a system designed to supply 64 flux biases to devices in a circuit designed to be a unit cell for a superconducting adiabatic quantum optimization system. The system requires six digital address lines, two power lines, and a handful of global analog lines.

A scalable control system for a superconducting adiabatic quantum optimization processor

Rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) electronics is based on the Josephson junction as an active switching element. In standard RSFQ circuits its switching energy is much lower than the static power consumption caused by the resistive current distribution network. Due to this thermal heating of the chip, the maximum number of junctions on a single chip is limited to about 1 million. The frequency-dependent contribution to power dissipation from junction switchings is only about 2 percent of the static one. This fact limits the direct construction of VLSI systems for high-performance computing as well as small-scale circuit applications in the vicinity of ultra-sensitive detectors or even quantum circuits. We present an assessment of different approaches for reducing the static power consumption by investigating the potential of inductive bias distribution networks as well as reduced critical currents. We analyse the operation stability of simple digital circuits with 5 times smaller critical currents at 4.2 K. The combination of the reduced critical currents and inductive biasing can provide digital superconductive circuits with significantly reduced static power consumption.

Reduced Power Consumption in Superconducting Electronics

Mainstream digital electronic technology based on semiconductor transistors keeps demonstrating remarkable progress. A reasonable question to ask, however, would be how long this progress will continue. Throughout the three decades of the exponential growth of this mainstream technology, this question has been the subject of much scientific and pseudo-scientific speculation.

Superconductor Devices for Ultrafast Computing

A methodology for designing single-flux-quantum (SFQ) flip-flops composed of both conventional (0-) and π-shifted Josephson junctions is investigated. We investigated the implementation of a storage loop, which can store flux quantum and is indispensable to express binary logic states in superconductor logic circuits. As all SFQ flip-flops have storage loops, the investigated design methodology can be applied to their design. We designed several SFQ flip-flops composed of 0- and π-shifted Josephson junctions using the investigated design methodology. The performances of the designed SFQ flip-flops were quantitatively evaluated by using an analog circuit simulator which we developed. We confirmed the correct operation of various SFQ flip-flops composed of 0- and π-shifted Josephson junctions with wide operating margins. Moreover, we observed that the investigated design methodology is suitable for SFQ flip-flops with complementary outputs because a storage loop composed of both 0- and π-shifted Josephson junctions has a symmetric structure and the complementary output function can be realized by using the storage loop. Our investigation indicates that the number of Josephson junctions and static power consumption of a non-destructive read-out flip-flop with complementary outputs (NDROC) can be reduced to less than half of those of the conventional NDROC, which has two storage loops composed of 0-Josephson junctions, to realize the complementary output function. The investigated design methodology is expected to be applied to not only SFQ circuits but also other superconducting logic circuits and novel reconfigurable logic devices using programmable 0-π Josephson junctions.

Design methodology of single-flux-quantum flip-flops composed of both 0- and π-shifted Josephson junctions

There is widespread interest in transferring Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) logic from niobium technology to a suitable HTS technology. The higher operating temperature results in increased noise and associated errors. We have developed numerical methods to study noise induced errors and how they depend on circuit parameters. A simple picture holds for all the circuits studied to date. The error probability shows an error function (integrated Gaussian) distribution. The width of the distribution is circuit dependent, but is 1 to 4 times the noise contribution of a single junction, and the noise free (deterministic) margin corresponds to the point where the error probability is 0.5. The distributions are frequently asymmetric, and minimum error rate does not occur for a design centered between the deterministic margins. A stochastic optimizer has been developed that allows us reoptimize circuits for conditions when noise induced margin narrowing is important. We have used this to study the influence of layout induced stray inductance on the feasibility of HTS circuits using the T flip-flop as an example. Stray inductance appears to be as important as junction reproducibility, and significant improvements are needed to allow high operating temperatures.
