A method and system for detecting memory leaks in an object-oriented environment during real-time trace processing is provided. During the profiling of a program executing in a data processing system, a profiler processes events caused by the execution of the program, and the profiler maintains a profile data structure containing execution-related metrics for the program. The execution-related metrics may include object allocation and deallocation metrics that are associated with object processing initiated on behalf of an executing method. An object allocator allocates objects during the execution of the program and modifies object allocation metrics in the profile data structure. Object metrics are stored in a particular location and a pointer to that location is stored in a hash table associated with the object's ID. In another embodiment the pointer to the location is stored in a shadow heap in the same relative position as the position of the object in the heap. The object allocation metrics and the object deallocation metrics may be compared to identify memory leaks.

A method is provided for scheduling execution of a plurality of threads executed in a multithreaded processor. Resource utilizations of each of the plurality of threads are measured while the plurality of threads are concurrently executing in the multithreaded processor. Each of the plurality of threads is scheduled according to the measured resource utilizations using a thread scheduler.

Method for scheduling threads in a multithreaded processor

Executing programs coded in an instruction set of a first computer on a computer of a second, different architecture. An operating system maintains an association between each one of a set of concurrent threads and a set of computer resources of the thread's context. Without modifying a pre-existing operating system of the computer, an entry exception is establishing to be raised on each entry to the operating system at a specified entry point or on a specified condition. The entry exception has an associated entry handler programmed to save a context of an interrupted thread and modify the thread context before delivering the modified context to the operating system. A resumption exception is established to be raised on each resumption from the operating system complementary to one of the specified entries. The resumption exception has an associated exit handler programmed to restore the context saved by a corresponding execution of the entry handler. The entry exception, exit exception, entry handler, and exit handler are cooperatively designed to maintain an association between a one of the threads and an extended context of the thread through a context change induced by the operating system, the extended context including resources of the computer associated with the thread beyond those resources whose association with the thread is maintained by the operating system.

Apparatus for executing programs for a first computer architechture on a computer of a second architechture

A method schedules execution contexts in a computer system based on memory interactions. The computer system includes a processor and a hierarchical memory arranged in a plurality of levels. Memory transactions are randomly sampled for a plurality of contexts. The contexts can be threads, processes, or hardware contexts. Resource interactions of the plurality of contexts is estimated, and particular contexts are chosen to be scheduled based on the estimated resource interactions.

Method for scheduling contexts based on statistics of memory system interactions in a computer system

In one embodiment, the present invention is directed to a system that includes an optimization unit to optimize a code segment, and a profiler coupled to the optimization unit. The optimization unit may include a compiler and a profile controller. Further, the profiler may be used to request programming of a channel with a scenario for collection of profile data during execution of the code segment. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Profiling using a user-level control mechanism

Fueled by higher clock rates and superscalar technologies, growth in processor speed continues to outpace improvement in memory system performance. Reflecting this trend, architects are developing increasingly complex memory hierarchies to mask the speed gap, compiler writers are adding locality enhancing transformations to better utilize complex memory hierarchies, and applications programmers are recoding their algorithms to exploit memory systems. All of these groups need empirical data on memory system behavior to guide their optimizations. This paper describes how to combine simple hardware support and sampling techniques to obtain such data without appreciably perturbing system performance. The idea is implemented in the Mprof prototype that profiles data stall cycles, first level cache misses, and second level misses on the Sun Sparc 10/41.
