This paper aims to select the optimal location and setting parameters of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) controller using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) to mitigate small signal oscillations in a multimachine power system Though Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) are prime choice in this issue, its performance gets affected by changes in network configurations, load variations etc Hence installation of FACTS device, SVC has been suggested here in order to achieve appreciable damping of oscillations However, performance of any FACTS devices highly depends upon its parameters and suitable location in the power network In this paper PSO as well as GA based techniques are used to investigate this problem An attempt has also been made to compare the performance of the PSO based SVC controller with its GA based design The validity of the proposed techniques is simulated in a multimachine system following two common disturbances It has been revealed that the PSO based SVC controller is more effective than GA based controller even during critical loading condition

A Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is one of the most widely used power system controllers to enhance the stability of the power systems. In this paper, a new optimization technique for tuning PSSs in multi machine power system is presented. It is used to tune five PSSs in a 39-Bus IEEE New England network to enhance the small signal stability. The technique used is based on Low Discrepancy Sequence (LDS) or Quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm. Different aspects regarding the application of this new algorithm are also presented. In addition, a comparison between LDS and one of the classical tuning methods namely Sequential Quadratic Optimization (SQP) is given. The results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the LDS method.

Low Discrepancy Sequences Based Optimization Algorithm for Tuning PSSs

With the growth of power system interconnections, the economic drivers encourage the electric companies to load the transmission lines near their limits, therefore it is critical to know those limits well. One important limiting issue is the damping of inter-area oscillation (IAO) between groups of synchronous machines. In this Ph.D. thesis, the contribution of power system components such as load and static var compensators (SVC) that affect the IAO of the power system, are analysed. The original contributions of this thesis are as follows: 1-Identification of eigenvalues and mode shapes of the IAO: In the first contribution of this thesis, the eigenvalues of the IAO are identified using a correlation based method. Then, the mode shape at each identified resonant frequency is determined to show how the synchronous generators swing against each other at the specific resonant frequencies. 2-Load modelling and load contribution to damping: The first part of this contribution lies in identification of the load model using cross-correlation and autocorrelation functions . The second aspect is the quantification of the load contribution to damping and sensitivity of system eigenvalues with respect to the load. 3- SVC contribution to damping: In this contribution the criteria for SVC controller redesign based on complete testing is developed. Then the effect of the SVC reactive power on the measured power is investigated. All of the contributions of this thesis are validated by simulation on test systems. In addition, there are some specific application of the developed methods to real data to find a.) the mode shape of the Australian electricity network, b.) the contribution of the Brisbane feeder load to damping and c.) the effect of the SVC reactive power of the Blackwall substations on the active power supplying Brisbane.

Identification of damping contribution from power system controllers

Power system stabilisers (PSSs) have been employed as the first choice to improve damping and extend system transfer capabilities However, a problem with a PSS is that its performance is strongly dependent on the power network and its interconnections Apart from PSS, static VAr compensator (SVC) can be also used for damping improvement This paper presents analysis performed to compare the effectiveness of PSS and SVC in damping power system oscillations under different system operating conditions It is concluded that a SVC properly tuned for one operating condition can provide good damping of system oscillations and good voltage control over a wide range of system operating conditions The results emphasise better effectiveness of a SVC than a PSS in damping power system oscillations and voltage control
