Engineering applications of synthetic polymers are widespread due to their availability, processability, low density, and diversity of mechanical properties (Figure 1a). Despite their ubiquitous nature, modern polymers are evolving into multifunctional systems with highly sophisticated behavior. These emergent functions are commonly described as “smart” characteristics whereby “intelligence” is rooted in a specific response elicited from a particular stimulus. Materials that exhibit stimuli-responsive functions thus achieve a desired output (O, the response) upon being subjected to a specific input (I, the stimulus). Given that mechanical loading is inevitable, coupled with the wide range of mechanical properties for synthetic polymers, it is not surprising that mechanoresponsive polymers are an especially attractive class of smart materials. To design materials with stimuli-responsive functions, it is helpful to consider the I-O relationship as an energy transduction process. Achieving the desired I-O linkage thus becomes a problem in finding how to transform energy from the stimulus into energy that executes the desired response. The underlying mechanism that forms this I-O coupling need not be a direct, one-step transduction event; rather, the overall process may proceed through a sequence of energy transduction steps. In this regard, the network of energy transduction pathways is a useful roadmap for designing stimuli-responsive materials (Figure 1b). Oscillating-water-column wave energy converters and air turbines: A review

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the varied physical circumstances in which interactions among water waves and currents occur. Different mathematical approaches, relevant observations, and experiments that are applicable to all or some of these physical circumstances are described. The emphasis is on waves and their interaction with preexisting currents rather than on wave-generated currents. Common simplifying assumption is that the waves are of sufficiently small amplitude for the free-surface boundary conditions to be linearized and evaluated at, or close to, the mean free surface. Most progress can be made in this subject with such a constraint, but wherever possible, finite-amplitude effects are discussed. Unlike some other common forms of wave motion, water waves involve water motion varying with direction perpendicular to the space in which they propagate. The chapter concludes on the interaction of waves generated by a ship with the flow around it.

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics

We shall restrict ourselves here to floating bodies without any means of propelling themselves. The body may, of course, be a ship lying dead in the water, but there is no real limitation to practical shapes of any particular sort except that we shall suppose the body to be hydrostatically stable. This will restrict the extent of this survey in an important way: we are able to slough off all effects associated with an average velocity of the body. Since mathematical solution of problems almost inevitably proceeds by way of linearization of the boundary conditions, this means that we may avoid introducing a linearization parameter whose smallness expresses the fact that the body doesn't disturb the water much during its forward motion, for example, slenderness or thinness. If we do introduce such a geometrical assumption, it will be an additional approximation, not one forced upon us by the physical situation. Fortunately, Newman's (1970) article treats, among other things, the recent advances in the theory of motion of slender ships under way. More can be found in a paper by Ogilvie (1964) . We shall assume from the beginning that motions are small and take this into account in formulating equations and boundary conditions. Further­ more, we shaH assume the fluid inviscid, and without surface tension. It is not difficult to write down equations and boundary conditions for a less restricted problem. However, since most results are for the case of small motions and since the perturbation expansions associated with the deriva­ tion of the linearized problem from the more exact one do not present any special points of interest, it seems more efficient to start with the simpler problem. Even so, some account will be given of recent attempts to consider nonlinear problems.

Publisher Summary Waves follow a moving ship and the propagation of these waves is associated with the presence of a gravitational field. Water is endowed with viscosity, and anybody moving through a viscous fluid, experiences a resistance, partly because of tangentially acting stresses on the body, but partly also because boundary-layer growth, and separation, if it occurs, yield a resistance resulting from integrating normal components of the stress over the body. The frictional resistance will certainly depend upon the wave profile along the ship. On the other hand, the wave pattern itself is going to depend in some fashion upon the ship's boundary layer and wake. The effects of gravity and viscosity interact in essential ways. There seems to be no neat practicable definition of gravitational or wave resistance without introducing assumptions or approximations.

For a hydrostatically stable floating body making small oscillations about a fixed position as a result of external forces and moments, it is shown that the radiation condition implies that the motion at time t depends only upon the forces and moments at times ≤t, i.e. that the future does not determine the present.
