▪ Abstract Image segmentation plays a crucial role in many medical-imaging applications, by automating or facilitating the delineation of anatomical structures and other regions of interest. We present a critical appraisal of the current status of semiautomated and automated methods for the segmentation of anatomical medical images. Terminology and important issues in image segmentation are first presented. Current segmentation approaches are then reviewed with an emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages of these methods for medical imaging applications. We conclude with a discussion on the future of image segmentation methods in biomedical research.

Current methods in medical image segmentation.

A method for unsupervised segmentation of color-texture regions in images and video is presented. This method, which we refer to as JSEG, consists of two independent steps: color quantization and spatial segmentation. In the first step, colors in the image are quantized to several representative classes that can be used to differentiate regions in the image. The image pixels are then replaced by their corresponding color class labels, thus forming a class-map of the image. The focus of this work is on spatial segmentation, where a criterion for "good" segmentation using the class-map is proposed. Applying the criterion to local windows in the class-map results in the "J-image," in which high and low values correspond to possible boundaries and interiors of color-texture regions. A region growing method is then used to segment the image based on the multiscale J-images. A similar approach is applied to video sequences. An additional region tracking scheme is embedded into the region growing process to achieve consistent segmentation and tracking results, even for scenes with nonrigid object motion. Experiments show the robustness of the JSEG algorithm on real images and video.

Image segmentation plays a crucial role in many medical imaging applications by automating or facilitating the delineation of anatomical structures and other regions of interest. We present herein a critical appraisal of the current status of semi-automated and automated methods for the segmentation of anatomical medical images. Current segmentation approaches are reviewed with an emphasis placed on revealing the advantages and disadvantages of these methods for medical imaging applications. The use of image segmentation in different imaging modalities is also described along with the difficulties encountered in each modality. We conclude with a discussion on the future of image segmentation methods in biomedical research.

A Survey of Current Methods in Medical Image Segmentation

Firstly, the paper proposes an axiomatic definition for the notion of "segmentation" in image processing, which is based on the idea of a maximal partition. Then a key theorem links segmentation with connection, on the one hand, and with connective criteria on the other one. A series of lattice properties are then developed. In a last part, two examples of segmentations are proposed.

Image segmentation

There have been significant efforts to build a probabilistic atlas of the brain and to use it for many common applications, such as segmentation and registration. Though the work related to brain atlases can be applied to nonbrain organs, less attention has been paid to actually building an atlas for organs other than the brain. Motivated by the automatic identification of normal organs for applications in radiation therapy treatment planning, we present a method to construct a probabilistic atlas of an abdomen consisting of four organs (i.e., liver, kidneys, and spinal cord). Using 32 noncontrast abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans, 31 were mapped onto one individual scan using thin plate spline as the warping transform and mutual information (MI) as the similarity measure. Except for an initial coarse placement of four control points by the operators, the MI-based registration was automatic. Additionally, the four organs in each of the 32 CT data sets were manually segmented. The manual segmentations were warped onto the "standard" patient space using the same transform computed from their gray scale CT data set and a probabilistic atlas was calculated. Then, the atlas was used to aid the segmentation of low-contrast organs in an additional 20 CT data sets not included in the atlas. By incorporating the atlas information into the Bayesian framework, segmentation results clearly showed improvements over a standard unsupervised segmentation method.

Construction of an abdominal probabilistic atlas and its application in segmentation

An unsupervised stochastic model-based approach to image segmentation is described, and some of its properties investigated. In this approach, the problem of model parameter estimation is formulated as a problem of parameter estimation from incomplete data, and the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used to determine a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimate. Previously, the use of the EM algorithm in this application has encountered difficulties since an analytical expression for the conditional expectations required in the EM procedure is generally unavailable, except for the simplest models. In this paper, two solutions are proposed to solve this problem: a Monte Carlo scheme and a scheme related to Besag's (1986) iterated conditional mode (ICM) method. Both schemes make use of Markov random-field modeling assumptions. Examples are provided to illustrate the implementation of the EM algorithm for several general classes of image models. Experimental results on both synthetic and real images are provided. >

Maximum-likelihood parameter estimation for unsupervised stochastic model-based image segmentation

Image segmentation is an important and early processing stage in many image analysis problems. Often, this must be done in an unsupervised fashion in that training data is not available and the class-conditioned feature vectors must be estimated directly from the data. A major problem in such applications is the determination of the number of classes actually present in an image. This problem, called the cluster validation problem, remains essentially unsolved. We investigate the cluster validation problem associated with the use of a previously developed unsupervised segmentation algorithm based upon the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. More specifically, we consider several well-known information-theoretic criteria (ICs) as candidate solutions to the validation problem when used in conjunction with this EM-based segmentation scheme. We show that these criteria generally provide inappropriate solutions due to the domination of the penalty term by the associated log-likelihood function. As an alternative we propose a model-fitting technique in which the complete data log-likelihood functional is modeled as an exponential function in the number of classes acting. The estimated number of classes are then determined in a manner similar to finding the rise time of the exponential function. This new validation technique is shown to be robust and outperform the ICs in our experiments. Experimental results for both synthetic and real world imagery are detailed.
