The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation that may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a video cassette recorder (VCR), medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

Based on a subscriber's viewing habits and account information, the present invention delivers different, customized advertisements to different viewers watching the same program or channel. The present invention delivers the advertisements as either still frame bit maps or as video streams advertisement insertion in a playlist or a broadcast media program.

A network provides users with a simple and secure way of establishing communication sessions with other users or services, running either over IP networks or other networks, e.g., PSTN. In a sense, the network can broker communication services between two or more users (e.g., people) and/or services. A plurality of different clusters of servers is provided, and each of the clusters may be linked together. In certain embodiments, each cluster includes multiple servers. Users are registered within some specific cluster and given a unique system/network ID. In certain embodiments, messages are not sent directly between users, but instead through at least one intermediate routing service (RS) provided on a server of one of the users. Thus, in certain embodiments, a user may hide or mask his/her personal information from other users even when communicating with them. In certain embodiments, a user may establish a communication session with another user without knowledge of the client device (e.g., PC, mobile phone, etc.) being used by the other user; as the network arranges for communication (e.g., text chat session, voice chat session (PC to PC, PC to PSTN, or PC to mobile phone), web conference, or pages (PC to PC, PC to SMS)) between the users regardless of the client device being used by the called user. Thus, the network enables any of the above communication services between users, and the initiating user need not know whether the other user is currently online via his/her PC or may instead be reached via pager or mobile phone.

Distributed system to intelligently establish sessions between anonymous users over various networks

Supporting mobile Internet multimedia applications requires more than just the ability to maintain connectivity across subnet changes. We describe how the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) can help provide terminal, personal, session and service mobility to applications ranging from Internet telephony to presence and instant messaging. We also briefly discuss application-layer mobility for streaming multimedia applications initiated by RTSP.

We discuss the architecture and technical viability of transporting real-time voice over packet-switched networks such as the Internet. The value of integrating voice and data networks onto a common platform is well known. The telephony industry has proposed the ATM standard as a means of upgrading the Internet to provide both real-time and data services. In contrast, voice services may be added to traditional IP networks that were originally designed for data transmission alone. We consider the feasibility and expected quality of service of audio applications over IP networks such as the Internet. In particular, we examine possible architectures for voice over IP and discuss measured Internet delay and loss characteristics.

Gateway routers for real-time networks have the ability to collect delay, loss, and jitter statistics on a per-connection basis. It is possible to use this information not only to monitor the quality of individual voice calls and other real-time connections, but also to evaluate the overall performance of the underlying network. This paper describes a method for monitoring and managing the performance of a real-time data network that supports voice, video and other real-time services. In the described embodiments, the RTCP mechanisms of RTP for sender and receiver reporting be used to relay performance information to one or more network monitoring sites for analysis and interpretation. In addition, gateway routers are organized and managed within a hierarchy that allows the monitoring function to localize it view of network conditions within the hierarchy; and the monitoring of network performance can occur on various time scales.

Method and system for monitoring and management of the performance of real-time networks

A method and apparatus for measurement-based conformance testing of service level agreements in networks. The method includes first collecting quality of service information from network traffic over a plurality of network nodes. Then, the collected quality of service information is compared to a plurality of specified quality of service levels. A plurality of possible virtual quality of service pathways through a plurality of network nodes is provided, based on the compared quality of service information. One embodiment of the method includes the additional step of creating a virtual connection using the compared quality of service information. In another embodiment of the method, the step of collecting quality of service information from network traffic over a plurality of network nodes includes first transmitting test traffic from a source to a destination over a plurality of network nodes. The transmitted test traffic is then received at the destination, and quality of service information is identified by comparing characteristics of the test traffic transmitted by the source to characteristics of the test traffic received by the destination.
