TL;DR: It is suggested that isoprene is a trait that evolved in plants adapted to high water availability; is replaced by more effective protection mechanisms, e.g. more stable isoprenoids, in plants adapting to more xeric environments; and being strongly constrained by phylogeny, persists in Salicaceae adapted to morexeric environments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Shape determines fire tolerance of seeds in temperate grasslands that are not prone to fire
TL;DR: It is shown that species of non-fire-prone temperate grasslands display diverse germination responses to fire, and the direction and magnitude of this response was best predicted by the shape of diaspores with elongated or flat seeds being most vulnerable to fire.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate and mammalian life histories
TL;DR: In bats, primates and even-toed ungulates adult body size tends to be larger in species inhabiting cold, dry, seasonal environments, whereas in carnivores and rodents a smaller body size is characteristic of warm, dry environments, suggesting that low food availability might limit adult size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal colour change by moult or by the abrasion of feather tips: a comparative study
TL;DR: The combined occurrence of prebreeding moult and feather abrasion was associated with the polygynous mating system, suggesting that species under strong sexual selection may employ both strategies of colour change to ensure the full expression of breeding coloration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increase of feather quality during moult: a possible implication of feather deformities in the evolution of partial moult in the great tit Parus major
TL;DR: The reduction in the number of fault bars during post-juvenile moult associated with their adaptive allocation to proximal wing feathers and rectrices may explain the evolution of partial post- juvenile moult in the great tit, since the quality of flight feathers can be increased significantly at a relatively small cost.
