Antibacterial activity against cariogenic bacteria and cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of Anacardium occidentale L. and Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan extracts

This study aimed to evaluate the intake, digestibility, milk yield and indicators of the metabolic status of native lactating ewes supplemented under grazing system. In the present study 28 lactating ewes were selected: 14 Morada Nova (MN) and 14 Santa Ines (SI), distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, with a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement of two breeds, two supplementation levels and two experimental periods. Blood samples were collected from lambing to 70 days of lactation, with 14 days interval. Laboratory analyses consisted in determining serum glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea and creatinine. Concentrate intake (g/day) during the lactation differed (P0.05) the serum levels of these metabolites. Indicators of the metabolic status were not affected by concentrate supplementation, which was effective for the maintenance of normal serum concentrations. However, these values differ between breeds within the permissible standards, indicating a high adaptation to postpartum.

This study aimed to evaluate the return of post partum ovarian activity in dairy goats supplemented with different levels of energy during the dry period in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco Twenty-four animals were allocated into four treatments of six animals each: Control, consisting of goats that had access to pasture and only received 4 kg of fresh palm, and three groups with isoproteic supplementation (20% Crude Protein), ranging in TDN content of 65%, 75% and 85% The daily milk yield showed a linear growth behavior (P 005) We concluded that the supplementation with different levels of energy promoted a positive effect, as increased productive parameters and reduced the number of days for the reestablishment of the reproductive parameters postpartum; for instance, uterine involution, return to estrus and consequently return of ovarian activity postpartum

Return of postpartum ovarian activity in dairy goats supplemented with different levels of energy

There have been few studies on the use of diets and strategies to reduce the postpartum anoestrus in dairy goats, especially in tropical semi-arid regions. This review discusses the factors influencing the return of postpartum ovarian activity in goats. The duration of puerperal anoestrus in goats directly affects the productivity of the herd. During the postpartum period, goats showed a puerperal anoestrus due to physiological changes in their reproductive tract to achieve a new conception. Anoestrus occurs as a result of tissue renewal in the uterus (uterine involution) which is associated with the return of cyclic ovarian activity, and is influenced by factors such as suckling of the offspring, the period of lactation, social interactions, body condition score (BCS) before and after birth, intensity of negative energy balance (NEB) and stress from adverse climatic conditions for example; the heat. The period of anoestrus can be extended, due to the delay in the cyclic reproductive activity in the puerperium. To minimize the negative effects of postpartum anoestrus on productivity, we recommend a mating season and a plan for the kidding period, as well as a program to increase the BCS during pregnancy so that the animals will have a better BCS at parturition and a nutritional plan for the lactation period.

Factors affecting postpartum ovarian activity of goats in tropical semi-arid region: Environment and nutrition factors in reproduction

The present study was to evaluate the effect of level of concentrate supplementation on the intake and some indicators of the metabolic parameters of native ewes in pregnancy and supplemented in a grazing system. 28 lactating ewes were selected: 14 Morada Nova (MN) and 14 Santa Ines (SI) were distributed in an experimental design completely randomized in 2x2x3 factorial arrangement with two breeds (MN and SI), two levels of supplementation (0.5 and 1.5% body weight) and three experimental periods (75, 105 and 135 days of pregnancy). The concentrate intake and total dry matter intake (DMI) was higher (P <0.05) on SI ewes and, in animals supplemented with 1.5% of concentrate, where the pregnancy progresses promoted the progressive decrease of DMI. There was breed effect (P <0.05) on metabolic parameters evaluated, in which the two breeds presented the same trend of mobilization of body reserves with decrease (P <0.05) in the body condition score close of parturition. Supplementation did not influence in the metabolic parameters. The metabolic parameters were influenced by breed, however, with normal values, indicating a good adaptability of the MN and SI breeds at the experimental conditions, promoting an evolution of production rates with 0.5% of concentrate supplementation.

Intake and some indicators of the metabolic status of native ewes in pregnancy and supplemented in grazing system

The objective, in this work, was to evaluate the effect of metabolizable energy offered on reproductive cyclic activity return of Morada Nova sheep, at different energy levels, during the lactation, since the pregnancy last third, 39 sheep, distributed in three treatments, during the rainy and dry season, were used. Experimental diets were formulated to meet a daily intake of 2.2, 2.8 and 3.4 Mcal of Metabolizable Energy (ME)/day and 150 g of crude protein, and the serum levels of progesterone and cortisol regarding, besides the reproductive performance, were evaluated. An entirely casualized design was used in a subdivided scheme for the hormone, and generalized linear models, by the Poisson distribution and binomial distribution in the non-parametric data. There was effect from interaction between period and treatment (P<0,05) for cortisol and progesterone serum, as well as for reproductive performance. The animals went through stress condition, which interfered in the return of reproductive cyclic activity and extended the anoestrus post-partum period, during the dry season. The offer of ME 3.4 Mcal must be recommended for Morada Nova sheep since the pregnancy last third because of the best performance rates and reproductive performance.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the proteic extract of R. communis on the cell physiology by the osmotic fragility, labeling of the blood elements with the 99mTc and cell morphology. To evaluate the osmotic fragility, the blood samples of the Wistar rats were incubated with the concentrations of R. communis and with the solutions of NaCl (0.4; 0.7; 0.9%). In the labeling of the blood elements procedure, the rat blood was treated with a solution of Tc-99m and TCA at 5%, determining the rate of radioactivity (%ATI) in the plasma (P) and in the red blood cells (RBC). The soluble and insoluble fractions of the plasma were also evaluated. The cells morphology submitted to the extract was evaluated by the optical microscopy (x40). The results indicated that the rate of the hemolysis increased in the presence of 0.125 mg/mL of the extract. There was a decay of 49.69% in the rate of ATI in the insoluble fraction of the cells, with the morphological alterations in the red blood cells. These results suggested that the extract changed the capability of binding of the red blood cells due to the stannous ion oxidation, modifying the cells structure.
