TL;DR: With a panel of immunohistochemical markers, it is possible to distinguish or narrow down most lung neoplasms and separate them into meaningful therapeutic categories.
Abstract: Context.—Immunohistochemistry is a very valuable and often used tool in the differential diagnosis of lung carcinomas whether primary or secondary to the lung. The most useful application ...

TL;DR: It is concluded that STAT3 and pSTAT3 are up-regulated in a high percentage of NSCLCs and MMs, regardless of tumor type, age, sex, smoking status, stage and grade of tumor, or survival, providing a basis for therapeutic intervention.

TL;DR: A possible etiologic link between systemic administration of gadolinium-containing magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents in patients with renal insufficiency and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is suggested.
Abstract: Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a rare, idiopathic systemic fibrosing disorder that is predominantly characterized by a clinicopathologically distinct symmetric dermopathy and debilitating joint contractures. The condition affects patients with renal insufficiency and appears to show improvement with prompt restoration of renal function. Although NSF was initially reported in the United States as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy, it has subsequently been described in patients in Europe and Asia. More than 215 cases of NSF have been reported in the nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy/NSF registry that is currently maintained at the Yale University. Recent reports suggest a possible etiologic link between systemic administration of gadolinium-containing magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents in patients with renal insufficiency and the development of NSF.

TL;DR: Eosinophilic bronchitis is a recently described, relatively benign condition in humans that is characterized by a corticosteroid‐responsive chronic cough and sputum eOSinophilia without the abnormalities of airway function seen in asthma.
Abstract: Background Eosinophilic bronchitis is a recently described, relatively benign condition in humans that is characterized by a corticosteroid-responsive chronic cough and sputum eosinophilia without the abnormalities of airway function seen in asthma The exact cause of this condition is currently unknown, however has been associated with various occupational exposures in humans It has also been reported to progress to irreversible airway obstruction This disease has been reported in dogs and horses, but not in non-human primates Methods Gross examination of an otherwise healthy 13-year-old, colony-born Macaca mulatta, which died of severe non-responsive respiratory distress revealed that the lungs were markedly inflated and moist Results Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections from the lungs contained widespread accumulation of eosinophils, sloughed epithelial cells, and mucus centered around bronchioles and adjacent airways There was no evidence of mast cell infiltration of peribronchiolar smooth muscle, goblet cell hyperplasia, or basement membrane thickening Conclusions This ruled out recurrent episodes as would be expected in asthma, favoring the diagnosis of an eosinophilic bronchitis-like lesion We report a first case of eosinophilic bronchitis-like features in a M mulatta

TL;DR: This section discusses nucleic acids, genes, and gene products; replication, translation, and transcription; posttranslational modifications of gene products and protein degradation; transcription factors, cell surface receptors and signaling pathways; mutations; and microRNAs and siRNAs.
Abstract: Molecular pathology involves study of nucleic acids, genes, and gene products. The development and progression of human cancers are linked to genetic instability and the accumulation of multiple genetic mutations, which can be investigated with the tools of molecular pathology. Molecular pathology provides a basis for understanding the biology of lung cancer, including its pathogenetic relationship to tobacco smoking, and increasingly is providing targets for therapeutic intervention. In this section, we briefly review the basic terminology and concepts, as an introduction or refresher to subsequent sections of this chapter, and we discuss nucleic acids, genes, and gene products; replication, translation, and transcription; posttranslational modifications of gene products and protein degradation; transcription factors, cell surface receptors and signaling pathways, the cell cycle, apoptosis, cell survival and DNA damage repair; mutations; and microRNAs and siRNAs.

TL;DR: The primary site of the metastatic cancer is not always clinically apparent, and this type of tumor is one of the 10 most frequent cancers in the world.
Abstract: Accurate identification of the primary site of a cancer is important to predict prognosis and select appropriate therapy. Approximately 10%–15% of cancers initially present as metastases to solid organs, body cavities, or lymph nodes. However, the primary site of the metastatic cancer is not always clinically apparent. About 3%–5% of all cancers are carcinomas of unknown primary, making this type of tumor one of the 10 most frequent cancers in the world.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Even with autopsy, in a series published in 2005 by Al-Brahim et al., a primary site was identified in only 51% of 53 cases of metastatic cancer of unknown origin.9
