The technical feasibility of roll motion control devices has been amply demonstrated for over 100 years. Performance, however, can still fall short of expectations because of difficulties associated with control system designs, which have proven to be far from trivial due to fundamental performance limitations and large variations of the spectral characteristics of wave-induced roll motion. This tutorial paper presents an account of the development of various ship roll motion control systems together with the challenges associated with their design. It discusses the assessment of performance and the applicability of different mathematical models, and it surveys the control methods that have been implemented and validated with full scale experiments. The paper also presents an outlook on what are believed to be potential areas of research within this topic.

Risk-based ship design demands advanced tools to accomplish the safety assessment of a given design. In this chapter, the background theory for the development and examples of application of related risk-based tools and of assessment procedures will be given. These tools and methods facilitate the analysis of the initiation and of the consequences of a variety of hazards, like system failure, collision, grounding, structural failure, fire, flooding and loss of intact stability. Finally tools for the simulation and analysis of evacuation, mustering & rescue procedures will be presented.

Ship Stability, Dynamics and Safety: Status and Perspectives

This paper presents a brief summary of the work carried out by SSRC and Brookes Bell Safety at Sea within the EC-funded project GOALDS on the development of a new formulation for assessing the survivability of damaged ships in waves. The proposed formula is meant to be an alternative or replacement to the s-factor in use within the current SOLAS regulations for probabilistic damage stability. The authors briefly discuss concerns related to the current survivability model and present the process of development that led to the re-engineered formulation.

Damage Survivability of Passenger Ships—Re-Engineering the Safety Factor

Following the reopening of the Intact Stability Code by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a number of questions are being raised concerning the practical applicability of Resolution A.562 known as the Weather Criterion on modern passenger ships and answers sought on a way forward by way of either re-examining and suitably tuning the criterion to reflect current (and emerging) ship particulars or adopting emerging approaches/philosophies to assessing ship safety, using first-principles performance assessment tools. This paper attempts to provide pertinent answers to these questions.
