This study further explores the concept of Patterns of Complexity, the minimal manageable “space” of complexity. The paper suggests and tests a method for assessing the perception of complexity in projects anchored with the concept of Pattern of Complexity. The empirical test consists of the measurement of the complexity of eight projects through the lens of the project manager. Based on these results, the set of characteristics, as well as the method used to assess its intensity, is discussed. The results indicate that that the Patter of Complexity can indeed serve as a thermometer of complexity. Moreover, it shows that project managers simultaneously deal with different kinds of complexity. This challenges the set of project management tools and calls for more integrated approaches for managing projects.

Measurement model of project complexity for large-scale projects from task and organization perspective

Robots are effective tools for aiding in the restoration of hand function through rehabilitation programs or by providing in-task assistance. To date, a multitude of exoskeletal devices employing distinct technologies have been proposed, making navigating this field a challenging task. To this end, we propose a set of classification criteria to help categorize devices. In this review, a set of 97 publications representing 72 active exoskeletal devices for hand assistance and rehabilitation is analysed. Furthermore, the distribution over the years within each of the criteria is presented. Results show clear trends, such as preferring underactuated devices, electrical transducers with flexible transmission or the more recent uptake of soft technologies. Lastly, the readiness level of hand exoskeleton technology is presented in terms of the whole device and each of the identified sub-classifications. Most of the devices are still in laboratory testing phase, undergoing healthy subject trials or limited clinical trials, with very few having actually reached the market. We hope to provide researchers with a comprehensive analysis of currently employed design choices in hand exoskeletons, highlighting the most developed avenues of research and the latest emerging ones.

Recent researches shows that software projects fail to meet their requirements in terms of time delay, cost overrun and quality restrictions. It is widely accepted that among the main reasons for these failures is the increased complexity of modern software projects arising from their special characteristics in comparison with projects from other domains. Software projects are affected of rapidly technological changes, are immaterial and supple. Current studies measure software project complexity by measuring either the software project product based on its attributes such as size, quality, reliability or the characteristics of software project process using attributes such as performance, stability, improvement. According to our approach these methods are not adequate as they do not focus in the software project development management process. This study, propose the managing of complexity in software projects by applying project management techniques, based on PMBOK, in software project development process and focuses on communication management. Communication management is among the most important knowledge areas in project management. Communication complexity sources that identified are project stakeholders’ properties, project environment, project communication structure, communication properties, physical and psychological barriers. A discussion exploring how these affects project communication performance is taken place. Finally for each complexity source a set of quantitative metrics and appropriate evaluation method are proposed to measure communication complexity.

Measuring communication complexity in projects

Software projects are among the most complex endeavours today. The increased complexity had led to high numbers of software project failures in terms of time, cost quality etc. Software project complexity is one of the main reasons for these failures. Various approaches to measure software complexity have been proposed focusing on the software product complexity but without considering the complexity of the process. In this paper it is presented the results of an extended literature review and of a statistical analysis followed for identifying the main factors that affect software project complexity taking into account both technical and project management aspects of the software development process.

Analysis of software project complexity factors

Modern software systems are growing increasingly complex, requiring increased complexity of software and software development process (SDP). Most software complexity measurement approaches focus on software features such as code size, code defects, number of control paths, etc. However, software complexity measurement should not only focus on code features but on features that cover several aspects of SDP in order to have a more complete approach to software complexity. To implement this approach, an extensive literature review for identifying factors that contribute to the complexity of SDP was performed and seventeen complexity factors were identified. As there were indications that the identified factors were not independent from each other but there were interrelations between them, statistical methods for identifying the underlined relations and refining them were applied, resulting to the final set of measures used in the proposed model. Finally, the proposed model has been tested in five software projects and the results were evaluated.
