A road finisher, which is used for simultaneously applying at least two surface layers comprises a chassis, a travelling mechanism, at least two premix containers arranged on said chassis, a lateral distributor associated with the respective premix container and adapted to have material supplied thereto via a conveyor path extending in the chassis, and lateral outriggers attached to the chassis as well as a dragged road-surface applying device used for applying a surface layer and arranged on said outriggers, all road-surface applying devices being high-compaction road-surface applying screeds for recompaction-free application of a surface layer, and each high-compaction road-surface applying screed constituting a rear screed, when seen in the direction of movement, which is constructed as a high-compaction road-surface applying screed which is adapted to be used for applying and compacting concrete. In the method of applying surface layers by use of such a road finisher, the surface layers are applied one immediately after the other and in one operation in such a way that each first surface layer is highly compacted during application to such a degree that recompaction is no longer necessary and each following surface layer is applied to the highly-compacted surface layer and then, in turn, highly compacted to such a degree that recompaction is no longer necessary.

Road finisher and a method of applying surface layers

A paving machine having a sensor-controlled concrete metering screed. The machine includes hydraulic cylinders which move the metering screed to various elevations to control the depth of concrete being metered out by the screed. At least one ultrasonic sensor is slide-mounted to the machine above and behind the metering screed to provide measurements of the distance between the sensor and the surface of the concrete just behind the screed. A control system compares the sensor measurements with a tolerance range of distances corresponding to the desired depth of concrete. When the sensor measurements are out of tolerance, the control system moves the metering screed up or down to bring the distance, and the metered depth of concrete, back within tolerance.

A paving material machine having a frame with an end-to-end tunnel for paving material capacity. The machine also includes an electro-hydraulic drive system using rotary transducers. In a configuration for laying down paving material, the machine has a front hopper for receiving paving material from trucks and a conveyor to transfer paving material rearward through the tunnel. A diverter plate and feed augers are mounted at the rear of the machine to regulate the paving material out of the rear of the tunnel. A lay down screed is located behind the feed augers. In order to improve turning characteristics in a system featuring a positive traction device, the drive system is connected to rotary transducers which measure the direction and degree of wheel turn. Using the input from the rotary transducers, the drive system allows a speed differential between the inside and outside wheels in a turn. In an alternate lay down machine embodiment, a windrow pickup assembly is substituted for the hopper and a pair of tunnel side forms are used in place of the conveyor. The frame having a tunnel and the drive system using rotary transducers may be utilized in a paving material transfer machine or a road widening machine.

In one aspect of the present invention, a control system for a floating screed assembly for an asphalt paving machine is disclosed. The screed assembly includes a main screed and extension screed unit. An electrohydraulic device extends and retracts, as well as, raises and lowers the extension screed unit relative to the main screed unit. The electrohydraulic device additionally pivots the extension screed unit relative to the main screed unit about a horizontal axis. Position sensors produce position signals in response to the position of the extension screed unit. A controller receives the position signals and produces command signals to control the extending, retracting, and pivoting of the extension screed unit to a desired position.

Screed control system for an asphalt paver and method of use

A tow point (43) for an asphalt paver (15), which allows the operator to: (1) select either a fixed or sliding tow point connection; and (2) select from among several possible locations of each; thereby adjusting the distance between the screed (20) and transverse auger (30) of the paver (15). Combination of these features in a single machine makes it possible to lay down an asphalt mat of uniformly desired thickness, while optimizing use of the aggregate batch particles.

An extendable, including screed extensions (20) which extend, retract and pivot relative to the main screed (10). The screed extensions (20) are mounted to the main screed (10) with a zero clearance pivot joint (38). The disclosed pivot joint (38) permits the screed extension (20) to extend, retract and pivot relative to the main screed (10) while maintaining zero clearance at the pivot. The pivot joint (38) includes respective mounting plates (21,28) on the extension screed (20) and the main screed (10) which are adapted for substantial coextensive engagement with each other in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the paver (5). A threaded fastener (38) is received in coaxial apertures (36,40) in the mounting plates (21,28) for defining the pivot axis (38) of the extension screed (20) thereby permitting slope adjustment of the extension screed (20) relative to the main screed (10). Tightening of the fastener (38) draws the mounting plates (21,28) in tight engagement with each other thereby establishing the zero clearance pivot joint. This zero clearance pivot joint (38) thereby improves alignment between the main screed sole plate (16) and the extension screed sole plate (24) during paving operations, resulting in a higher quality road surface.

A paving material distribution system for uniformly distributing a layer of paving material includes a containment member (18) that is slidably mounted on the rear frame (12) of a paving machine (14). A first means (30) for conveying paving material laterally with respect to the direction of travel of the paving machine is positioned at a preselected distance from the containment member (18). Power means (46) are also included to controllably, simultaneously move the containment member (18) and the first means (30) in a substantially vertical direction.
