Matter is commonly found in the form of materials. Analytical mechanics turned its back upon this fact, creating the centrally useful but abstract concepts of the mass point and the rigid body, in which matter manifests itself only through its inertia, independent of its constitution; “modern” physics likewise turns its back, since it concerns solely the small particles of matter, declining to face the problem of how a specimen made up of such particles will behave in the typical circumstances in which we meet it. Materials, however, continue to furnish the masses of matter we see and use from day to day: air, water, earth, flesh, wood, stone, steel, concrete, glass, rubber, ... All are deformable. A theory aiming to describe their mechanical behavior must take heed of their deformability and represent the definite principles it obeys.

The non-linear field theories of mechanics

: Strain-displacement relations for thin shells valid for large displacements are derived. With these as a starting point approximate straindisplacement relations and equilibrium equations are derived by making certain simplifying assumptions. In particular the middle surface strains are assumed small and the rotations are assumed moderately small. The resulting equations are suitable as a starting point for stability investigations or other problems in which the effects of deformation on equilibrium cannot be ignored, but in which the rotations are not too large. The linearized forms of several of the sets of equations derived coincide with small deflection theories in the literature.

Nonlinear theories for thin shells

A plate and more generally a shell is a special three-dimensional body whose boundary surface has special features. Although we defer defining a shell-like body in precise terms until Sect. 4, for the purpose of these preliminary remarks consider a surface—called a reference surface—and imagine material filaments from above and below surrounding the surface along the normal at each point of the reference surface. Suppose further that the bounding surfaces formed by the end points of the material filaments are equidistant from the reference surface. Such a three-dimensional body is called a shell if the dimension of the body along the normals, called the thickness, is small. A shell is said to be thin if its thickness is much smaller than a certain characteristic length of the reference surface, e.g., the minimum radius of the curvature of the reference surface for initially curved shells.2

Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws: The Theory of Classical and Nonclassical Shock Waves

This paper treats the dynamics of phase transformations in elastic bars The specific issue studied is the compatibility of the field equations and jump conditions of the one-dimensional theory of such bars with two additional constitutive requirements: a kinetic relation controlling the rate at which the phase transition takes place and a nucleation criterion for the initiation of the phase transition A special elastic material with a piecewise-linear, non-monotonic stress-strain relation is considered, and the Riemann problem for this material is analyzed For a large class of initial data, it is found that the kinetic relation and the nucleation criterion together single out a unique solution to this problem from among the infinitely many solutions that satisfy the entropy jump condition at all strain discontinuities

This paper is concerned with the incorporation of thermal effects into the continuum modeling of dynamic solid-solid phase transitions. The medium is modeled as a one-dimensional thermoelastic solid characterized by a specific Helmholtz free-energy potential and a specific kinetic relation. Heat conduction and inertia are taken into account. An initial-value problem that gives rise to both shock waves and a propagating phase boundary is analyzed on the basis of this model.
