A heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel is disclosed. This steel essentially consists of: not more than 0.06% C, 1-4% Si, 0.5-4% mn, not more than 0.035% P, not more than 0.005% S, 10-17% Ni, 14-20% Cr, 1-4% Mo, 0.01-0.5% Al, not more than 0.035% N, and balance essentially Fe, and may further contain small amounts of any of Cu, REM and B and the composition thereof is adjusted so that a limited amount of δ-ferrite appears in solidification. The steel has excellent hot salt corrosion resistance, weldability, salt errosion resistance of the weld and hot-workability.

The control system includes a pair of ice bank sensors for sensing first and second locations of the surface of the ice bank, the second sensor being spaced further from the cooling coils than is the first sensor. Each sensor generates an electrical signal which, through appropriate electrical control circuitry, controls the on/off mode of the electrical motor that drives the water agitator and also the electrical motor that operates the refrigeration unit.

An austenitic stainless steel alloy is disclosed, having excellent fast neutron irradiation swelling resistance and good post irradiation ductility, making it especially useful for liquid metal fast breeder reactor applications. The alloy contains: about 0.04 to 0.09 wt. % carbon; about 1.5 to 2.5 wt. % manganese; about 0.5 to 1.6 wt. % silicon; about 0.030 to 0.08 wt. % phosphorus; about 13.3 to 16.5 wt. % chromium; about 13.7 to 16.0 wt. % nickel; about 1.0 to 3.0 wt. % molybdenum; and about 0.10 to 0.35 wt. % titanium.

The present invention is based on the discovery that radiation-induced voids which occur during fast neutron irradiation can be controlled by small but effective additions of titanium and silicon. The void-suppressing effect of these metals in combination is demonstrated and particularly apparent in austenitic stainless steels.
