End-of-life decision-making in six European countries: descriptive study

This review examines the empirical evidence on the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) in men. The main theoretical frameworks used in this area are outlined, and methodological issues are discussed. Studies examining posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, depression, and suicidal ideation in men who have experienced IPV are reviewed. The limited research on the effects of IPV in same-sex couples is considered. Outcomes suggest that men can experience significant psychological symptoms as a consequence of IPV; associations among IPV and PTS, depression, and suicide have been documented. Recommendations for future research on the effects of IPV in male victims are provided, including the need to focus on externalizing, in addition to internalizing, symptomatology; the development of gender-appropriate measures of violent behavior; and the comparison of male IPV and non-IPV samples. In-depth qualitative research and studies focusing on psychological abuse experienced by men would also be valuable.

A review of the evidence on the effects of intimate partner violence on men.

Objectives: To review studies over a 20-year period that assess the attitudes of UK doctors concerning active, voluntary euthanasia (AVE) and physician-assisted suicide (PAS), assess efforts to minimise bias in included studies, determine the effect of subgroup variables (e.g. age, gender) on doctors’ attitudes, and make recommendations for future research.Data sources: Three electronic databases, four pertinent journals, reference lists of included studies.Review methods: Literature search of English articles between January 1990 and April 2010. Studies were excluded if they did not present independent data (e.g. commentaries) or if they related to doctors outside the UK, patients younger than 18 years old, terminal sedation, withdrawing or withholding treatment, or double-effect. Attitudes of UK doctors towards euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide: A systematic literature review:

Euthanasia or assisted suicide—and sometimes both— have been legalized in a small number of countries and states. In all jurisdictions, laws and safeguards were put in place to prevent abuse and misuse of these practices. Prevention measures have included, among others, explicit consent by the person requesting euthanasia, mandatory reporting of all cases, administration only by physicians (with the exception of Switzerland), and consultation by a second physician. The present paper provides evidence that these laws and safeguards are regularly ignored and transgressed in all the jurisdictions and that transgressions are not prosecuted. For example, about 900 people annually are administered lethal substances without having given explicit consent, and in one jurisdiction, almost 50% of cases of euthanasia are not reported. Increased tolerance of transgressions in societies with such laws represents a social “slippery slope,” as do changes to the laws and criteria that followed legalization. Although the initial intent was to limit euthanasia and assisted suicide to a lastresort option for a very small number of terminally ill people, some jurisdictions now extend the practice to newborns, children, and people with dementia. A terminal illness is no longer a prerequisite. In the Netherlands, euthanasia for anyone over the age of 70 who is “tired of living” is now being considered. Legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide therefore places many people at risk, affects the values of society over time, and does not provide controls and safeguards.

Legalizing Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide: The Illusion of Safeguards and Controls

Objective: Given the recent publication of Dutch guidelines for euthanasia of the mentally ill, our aim in this paper is to review the clinical role of the psychiatrist in assessing patients who seek euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide.Method: Three areas are examined that are informative of the role of the psychiatrist in assessing patients who desire death: recent surveys of psychiatrists' attitudes, empirical and clinical studies, and treatment issues.Results: Demoralisation and depression emerge as pertinent clinical issues worthy of psychiatric intervention. The role of the psychiatrist is complex and includes issues of assessment, systems, countertransference and treatment.Conclusions: Dutch guidelines for physician-assisted suicide in the mentally ill generate serious concern given the uncertainty of prognosis, potential range and variability of outcome of treatments of suicidality and the boundary violations that are involved for the psychiatrist. With the increasing numbers of older drivers on our roads, it is important that clinicians are able to advise patients about their fitness to drive. The regulations regarding medical fitness to drive in the United Kingdom have recently been changed, bringing them into line with those of the European Community. This article outlines the regulations regarding fitness to drive for the elderly mentally ill.
